Why is Bloom Energy (BE) up ~13% today? Nebius just picked its fuel cells

Bloom Energy BE AI-power win decoded

Bloom Energy (NYSE: BE) is up about 12–13% today, to roughly $238 — Benzinga clocked it at +12.3% ($237.24) at 9:55 a.m. ET, and by midday 24/7 Wall St had it +13% at $238. That extends a run that has BE up about 171% year-to-date.

What actually moved it

Not a broker upgrade this time — a customer win. On Nebius Group's Q2 earnings call, the NVIDIA-backed AI-cloud operator named Bloom as the behind-the-meter power partner for its flagship 300-megawatt AI data center in Vineland, New Jersey. Nebius execs said switching to Bloom's solid-oxide fuel cells “significantly enhances” the project and helps it “unlock and expedite” a site that had been stuck on permitting and community pushback over proposed on-site gas generation — with “no significant impact” on the timeline. Nebius also reiterated a goal to reach 5 GW of contracted power by year-end.

Here's why one contract sent the stock up double digits: the AI bottleneck has shifted from chips to electricity. Grid interconnections take years; Bloom's fuel cells drop onto a site and power GPUs in months. It backs up CEO KR Sridhar's July claim that “all the major US hyperscalers and over a dozen” neoclouds have approved Bloom's power for their AI factories. Bloom's Q2 revenue was $1.07B, up ~165% YoY (product revenue +215%), so the orders are starting to show. It didn't hurt that CoreWeave posted a blowout Q2 the same morning (revenue ~$2.58B, backlog near $104B) — separate news, same message: the buildout is accelerating and every new site needs power.

The ripple

The whole fuel-cell complex got dragged up in sympathy. FuelCell Energy (FCEL) rose ~11% to $21.35 with no company-specific news of its own — pure read-through — and the Global X Hydrogen ETF (HYDR) added ~4%. Plug Power (PLUG) lagged at +3%, giving back Tuesday's lead. The transmission is direct: each hyperscaler that picks Bloom turns its “validated by the big names” pitch into booked backlog, and traders front-run the read-through names.

The one risk

A selection is not signed, booked revenue — the real tell is whether this converts into follow-on hyperscaler orders. And BE is a high-beta name (beta ~3.8, P/E ~285x) that round-tripped a brutal ~35% drawdown into its late-July print, so it can unwind fast. Concrete thing to watch: whether BE holds the ~$235 area into the close, and whether HYDR confirms — that separates a theme re-rating from a one-stock pop.
