Why did Albemarle (ALB) drop ~5.9% — the S&P 500's worst stock on Tuesday?

Albemarle closed at $133.18 on Tuesday, down 5.9% — the single worst performer in the S&P 500 that session. There was no earnings report, no company guidance cut, no deal. One analyst note did all of it.
JPMorgan's Jeffrey Zekauskas kept his Neutral rating and quietly rebuilt the model underneath it. He cut 2026 adjusted EBITDA 14.4% to $2.88bn (from $3.37bn) and 2027 by 18.4% to $2.93bn (from $3.59bn). EPS went to $12.05 from $14.20 for 2026, and $11.65 from $15.35 for 2027. His price target now reads $140 for December 2027 — versus the $160 he'd had on December 2026. A lower number, a year further out. That's the part the tape reacted to.
It all comes down to one price
China lithium carbonate averaged $24,810 a tonne in Q2 and has slipped to roughly $21,625 in Q3. JPMorgan now models the low-$20s per kilo instead of the mid-$20s. For Albemarle that is not a rounding error: every $1/kg move in lithium is worth about $250m of annual EBITDA. Shift the deck down ~$3/kg and roughly $750m walks out of the model — which is essentially the entire cut.
Who else sits in that price
Albemarle isn't a company-specific story here, it's a price story, and the same carbonate print sets revenue at SQM, Pilbara Minerals and Ganfeng — the same $3/kg slide lands on their tonnes too, just scaled to volume. The mirror image is the buy side of that contract: cell and pack makers and grid-storage builders book cheaper cathode input per kWh at $21.6k a tonne than they did at $24.8k. Falling lithium is a margin transfer from the miners to the battery assemblers.
The one thing that flips it is the same number that broke it. If Q3 China carbonate climbs back toward the Q2 $24,810 average — about $3/kg higher — JPMorgan's low-$20s deck fails, and by their own sensitivity roughly $250m of EBITDA returns for each $1/kg. Watch the weekly carbonate print, not the stock chart. Also worth knowing: at $133 the shares still sit inside a 52-week range of $71.25 to $221.00, so this is a violent tape either way.
