Post-Market Wrap — Aug 31, 2026 | How India & the world closed

Post-market wrap

Indian equities closed lower for a second session as Brent crude pushed towards $90 on fresh US-Iran escalation, reviving imported-inflation worries just as a hawkish Fed narrative firmed up abroad.

How India closed

  • Sensex 76,957.27, -307.24 pts (-0.40%) — Business Standard / IANS
  • Nifty 50 24,080.40, -95.25 pts (-0.39%) — Business Standard / IANS
  • Nifty Midcap +0.24%, Smallcap -0.74% (IANS) — a recovery from the morning, when midcaps were down 0.92% (Business Standard)
  • Bank Nifty close not verified at time of writing; Nifty Private Bank was among the outperformers (Business Standard)

The drag was narrow, not broad. Media, Metal, Realty and IT lagged while Auto and Private Bank cushioned (IANS). Nifty Metal fell ~2% intraday on Hindalco, Vedanta and Hindustan Zinc; Infosys and Tech Mahindra dropped 2.2-3% on the rate-hike repricing (Trading Economics).

Movers and stories

  • HDFC Bank rose ~1.9-2.5% after MD & CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan said he will not seek a third term from October — read as succession clarity (Trading Economics, Business Standard).
  • Sterlite Technologies +4.6% to Rs 757.70 on a $288 million order win (Business Standard).
  • ITC, Bharti Airtel and Eternal were among the biggest Nifty losers (IANS).
  • Augmont Enterprises listed at a 21.32% premium — Rs 956 on BSE vs the Rs 788 issue price, after 105.78x subscription (Business Standard).
  • MSCI's rebalance takes effect tomorrow, routing roughly $5 billion through India's new closing auction with a Reliance weight cut (Bloomberg, Business Standard).

Flows, currency, commodities

Today's provisional FII/DII data was not out at the time of writing. On Friday, FIIs sold Rs 5,039.80 crore net in cash and DIIs bought Rs 5,183.93 crore (Business Standard, India TV). The rupee was quoted at 95.56/$, 13 paise weaker than Friday's 95.43, dollar index 99.62, with RBI smoothing the move and forex reserves at a record $729.328 billion (Business Standard). Brent traded near $89.30-$90.70, up 1.3-1.8%, after US forces struck Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island and Tehran hit US bases in Jordan (Trading Economics, Reuters).

Global now

Europe is soft, not panicked: STOXX 600 -0.1% at 655.54, DAX -0.7%, energy names up 1.8-3.8%; London is shut for a bank holiday and the STOXX still tracks a fifth straight monthly gain, +0.9% in August (Reuters). US futures slipped, S&P 500 quoted at 7,698.24, -0.25% (Trading Economics). In Asia the Nikkei 225 closed 65,550, -855.56 pts (-1.29%) on Advantest, Tokyo Electron and SoftBank; China and Hong Kong also fell.

Data: today and next

India: Q1 FY27 GDP lands after the close — consensus near 7.2% (range 6.9-8.0%) vs 7.8% in Q4 FY26, with a delayed monsoon and softer services expected to make it a four-quarter low (Business Standard). Tomorrow: S&P Global India Manufacturing PMI, monthly auto and vehicle sales, August GST collections. Global: China's NBS manufacturing PMI printed 49.8 for August, up from 49.2 but still contracting, non-manufacturing 49.0 (FXStreet, SCMP). Ahead: eurozone flash inflation and German CPI, US ISM manufacturing, and Friday's US August jobs report — the real test of the September rate-hike bet after Kevin Warsh's hawkish remarks (Reuters, Trading Economics).

What to watch tonight and tomorrow

The GDP print is the immediate swing factor: a number at the low end of that range would sit awkwardly with $90 crude and a 95-plus rupee. Watch whether tomorrow's MSCI flows produce a clean auction or a messy one, and whether energy strength keeps rotating money out of metals and IT into autos and private banks. Overnight, Brent and US yields matter more than any single stock story. Sentiment reads mildly risk-off — driven by oil and rates, not by anything domestic.
