OpenAI is cutting Cursor off on Nov 12 — three weeks after SpaceX paid $60bn for it

OpenAI cutting off Cursor decoded

OpenAI has told Cursor it will stop serving it models on November 12, 2026 — about three weeks after SpaceX completed a $60bn all-stock takeover of Cursor's parent, Anysphere. The reason OpenAI gave isn't price or performance. It's trust.

What OpenAI actually said

Its stated line, reported by Bloomberg and Reuters: OpenAI "cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our experience with Elon Musk's companies violating contracts" — a pointed nod to X, which OpenAI says breached its agreement after Musk bought it. Cursor co-founder Michael Truell, now a SpaceX executive, pushed back: "Cursor was one of the very first users of OpenAI... we've trusted their platform to be neutral infrastructure for our business." He says talks to resolve it are underway.

The numbers behind it

Cursor isn't a side project. Bloomberg reported in May 2026 that it had hit a $3bn annual sales rate, just ahead of the SpaceX deal. SpaceX paid $60bn for that — roughly 3% of its own $1.92tn market cap. SPCX closed Friday at $140.87, up 0.45%, still well below its $225.64 52-week high (Investing.com, StockAnalysis). Cursor resells frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google alongside Musk's Grok and its in-house Composer line. On Nov 12, one of those four doors shuts.

Who's actually exposed

SPCX is the ticker that wears this. SpaceX bought a distribution business whose product quality depends on rented models. Losing GPT access doesn't kill Cursor — Composer, Anthropic and Gemini stay — but it hands enterprise buyers a reason to stall during Q4 renewal season, which is exactly when annual seats get re-signed.

Alphabet (GOOGL) picks up spillover. Every OpenAI call Cursor reroutes after Nov 12 becomes billable inference somewhere else, and Gemini is already wired into the product. Anthropic gains the same way, but it's private — Google is the listed way to express it.

Microsoft (MSFT) gets a sales script. GitHub Copilot is Cursor's closest rival and runs on the very OpenAI models Cursor is about to lose. "Our model supply isn't collateral in someone else's feud" writes itself into a Copilot renewal pitch.

The one thing that flips it

Truell says they're talking. If OpenAI and SpaceX settle before November 12, this whole read-through unwinds into a fortnight of noise. The two things to watch: an OpenAI confirmation that the cutoff stands, or a Cursor announcement naming a replacement default model. Whichever lands first tells you which way it went.
