Why did AppLovin (APP) crater ~18% after a quarter it grew 53%?

AppLovin (NASDAQ: APP) got torched after its Q2 report. The stock fell from a $417.80 close to about $350 — a ~16% after-hours drop, per Investing.com, and several outlets (Seeking Alpha, StockStory/Yahoo) had it down ~20–21% at the session low. At the trough, roughly $40 billion of market value evaporated.
Here's the twist: the business didn't break. Revenue actually grew 53% year over year to $1.92 billion — it just landed a hair under the ~$1.94 billion Street estimate, a shortfall of only about $16 million. Adjusted EPS of $3.76 even beat. So a company still compounding north of 50% shed a fifth of its value on a rounding-error miss. That's not a fundamentals story, it's an expectations story: APP had ripped higher all year on a streak of blowout beats, and priced for perfection, the first crack in that streak was enough.
What actually spooked the tape: management said improvements to its AXON AI ad engine — the thing that lifts how much advertisers spend — were lighter than usual this quarter. That engine is the bull case, so any hint it's throttling gets punished hard. They flagged a stronger step-up just after quarter-end, but the guide didn't reassure: Q3 revenue was guided to $2.07 billion, ~0.6% below consensus, and several analysts cut their ratings on the print.
The ripple
After divesting its own apps/games business, AppLovin is now essentially a pure-play ad engine — its customers are the mobile-game and app publishers who lean on AXON to monetize. If the model's gains plateau, those advertisers get less ROI lift and spend less, which directly caps APP's own growth. It also capped a brutal ad-tech week: The Trade Desk (TTD) crashed ~25% on its own miss, so the market is now ruthlessly sorting the ad-tech winners from the stumblers instead of buying the whole group.
The one thing that flips it: whether that promised post-quarter step-up shows up in hard numbers. If Q3 revenue clears the $2.07 billion guide when APP next reports (~early November), this looks like an overreaction; if it lands light again, the multiple keeps compressing. Nearer term, watch whether ~$350 holds.
