Liberty Energy (LBRT) beat Q2 — so why did it crash ~22%?

Liberty Energy (NYSE: LBRT) did the counterintuitive thing Thursday — it beat on Q2 and still fell ~22%, closing at $19.62, one of its worst single days ever.
The quarter was fine. Revenue landed near $1.19B, ahead of the Street; adjusted EPS was 9¢ vs the ~7¢ analysts penciled in; adjusted EBITDA was $151M. On the headline numbers, this was a beat.
So what tanked it? One line in the guidance. Liberty hiked its 2026 capex budget by nearly 50%, to about $1.5B — and most of that jump is deposit payments to lock up long-lead-time power-generation equipment, not fracking gear. Frac is the cash cow; management is plowing that cash into a big new bet, and the market hates paying today for returns that show up years out.
What the bet actually is
Liberty is pushing past oilfield services into power generation for data centers and other large-load customers. The centerpiece is a new JV with PowerBridge targeting ~3 gigawatts of capacity, which Liberty says can earn 17–18% long-term returns. Good story — but it turns an asset-light frac outfit into a capital-hungry power developer, and Thursday's tape says investors want proof before they pay for it.
The ripple: those deposits are orders for someone. A near-50% capex jump aimed at turbines and gensets is a demand signal for the gas-power supply chain — the GE Vernova, Caterpillar and Cummins types that build this gear — and it's the latest sign the "power for AI" land-grab is pulling capital out of traditional oil work. For frac peers like Halliburton and ProPetro, it's also a tell that completions pricing is soft enough that diversification, not buybacks, is where the cash is heading.
The one risk that flips it: this is a bet on execution. Watch the Q3 print in late October — if Liberty shows signed data-center power contracts and a firming backlog, the capex reads as growth; if it can't, a ~50% spend hike with no revenue attached starts to look like cash burn, and $19.62 won't be the floor.
