Post-Market Wrap — Sep 04, 2026 | How India & the world closed

Indian equities snapped a four-day losing streak on Friday, with the rebound driven less by anything domestic than by Fed Governor Christopher Waller signalling he could back a rate hold in September — which cooled US rate-hike fears, lifted global equities overnight and firmed emerging-market currencies against the dollar (Business Standard).
How India closed
- Sensex: 76,515.43, up 362.57 pts (+0.48%) — Business Standard
- Nifty 50: 23,897.70, up 24.25 pts (+0.10%) — Business Standard
- Nifty Midcap 100: -0.25% | Nifty Smallcap 100: +0.22% — Business Standard
- Bank Nifty close: not verified at the time of writing (n/a)
Note the split: the Sensex gained roughly five times as much in percentage terms as the Nifty, so strength sat in a few heavyweights rather than across the board. Gains faded from the highs on profit-taking and caution before tonight's US jobs report.
Sectors and stocks
Nifty Metal led, rising over 1%; Nifty Realty was the biggest laggard. HCLTech, Bharti Airtel and Maruti Suzuki led Nifty 50 declines (Business Standard). Among the day's big single-stock stories reported intraday by 5paisa: New India Assurance (+12.17%) and IFCI (+11.74%) ripped on NSE IPO speculation — both hold direct or indirect stakes in the exchange; Tejas Networks (+7.42%) on a ₹1,537 crore letter of intent from TCS for BSNL 4G radio equipment. On the other side, Aditya Birla Group's ₹1,800 crore entry into wires and cables under the "Ultravolt" brand hit the incumbents hard — KEI Industries -8.03%, RR Kabel -7.25%, Polycab -5.17%.
Flows, currency, commodities
FII/DII (provisional, 3 September): FIIs sold ₹2,345.87 crore; DIIs bought ₹4,977.46 crore (India TV News). Today's provisional figures were not published at the time of writing. The rupee was quoted around 94.45/$ and broadly stable during the session (Investing.com). Brent traded near $96/bbl and was heading for its steepest weekly gain since mid-July on Middle East tensions (Reuters) — the single biggest medium-term risk to India's import bill and inflation path. Gold futures were around $4,509/oz, off 0.68% (Investing.com).
Global right now
Asia closed strong: Nikkei 225 +1.28% (SoftBank +11.78%); Hang Seng +2.07% at 25,734, its highest since 21 August, on a tech rally and IPO buzz (Investing.com, Trading Economics). Europe is flat-to-soft: STOXX 600 648.67, -0.1%, with DAX +0.1%, FTSE 100 -0.1%, CAC 40 -0.2%; Volkswagen jumped 6% on a turnaround plan involving 50,000 job cuts, lifting European autos 1.1%, while chemicals and banks fell about 1% (Reuters). US futures are mixed and tentative: Dow e-minis -0.07%, S&P 500 +0.06%, Nasdaq 100 +0.42%; the US 10-year sits at 4.759% (Reuters).
The data that matters
India: the HSBC/S&P Global India Services PMI came in at 54.1 for August (released 3 September, Business Standard). RBI's weekly forex reserves print is due this evening. Tonight, 6:00 PM IST — US August non-farm payrolls. Consensus is roughly +56,000 after July's -23,000, unemployment steady at 4.1%, average hourly earnings +0.3% m/m and 3.0% y/y; ADP had already undershot at +38,000 (InvestingLive). This is the last major input before the Fed's pre-meeting blackout, and CME FedWatch pricing moved to roughly a 50% chance of a September hike from 63% after Waller spoke (Reuters).
What to watch
Sentiment is cautiously risk-on, but it is borrowed — it rests on one Fed governor's remarks, not on Indian fundamentals. A hot payroll print or firm wage growth would put the September hike back on the table and likely unwind today's relief in the rupee and in rate-sensitives like realty and banks; a soft print does the opposite. Separately, Brent above $95 is India's slow-burn problem, pressuring the trade deficit and the inflation outlook whatever the Fed does. Watch FII flows next week for whether foreign money treats this bounce as a turn or a pause.
