Post-Market Wrap — Sep 03, 2026 | How India & the world closed

Post-market wrap

India closed lower for a fourth straight session as an early rally faded, with index heavyweights in IT, FMCG and auto pulling the Sensex down 417 points even as banks, realty and the broader market finished higher.

How India closed

  • Sensex 76,152.86, down 417.49 pts (-0.55%) — as reported by Business Standard
  • Nifty 50 23,873.45, down 41.00 pts (-0.17%) — Business Standard
  • Nifty Bank 57,380.60, up 208.60 pts (+0.36%) — Google Finance quote at 3:31 pm IST
  • Broader market outperformed: Nifty Midcap marginally higher, Smallcap up roughly 1% (Business Standard)

Why the day went this way

The session opened firm because oil steadied and the global bond selloff eased — yields had spiked this week as renewed US-Iran fighting lifted crude and revived inflation fears (Reuters). But the bid never reached the Sensex's largest weights: Nifty IT and FMCG fell the most, with auto also weighing, and that concentration is why the Sensex (-0.55%) lagged the Nifty (-0.17%) so badly.

Underneath, it was a rotation, not a rout. Private and PSU banks outperformed, and Nifty Realty soared as much as 3% intraday on expectations of a revenue-growth recovery, luxury-housing demand, lower rates and GST rationalisation — Anant Raj rallied ~9% to Rs 640.25 and Brigade Enterprises ~8% to Rs 694.05 (Business Standard).

Flows, currency, commodities

  • FII/DII: today's provisional data was not published at the time of writing. On 2 Sep, FIIs were net buyers of Rs 6,688.40 crore and DIIs of Rs 2,813.00 crore in cash (5paisa, NiftyTrader).
  • Rupee: gained 69 paise to 94.29/$ intraday, its strongest since June, on bumper FCNR(B) inflows (Business Standard). RBI's special swap windows had drawn $136.3 billion by end-August (IANS).
  • Crude: Brent about $95.13, down ~0.5% (Investing.com) after a six-week high on Iran escalation.
  • Gold: futures near $4,480/oz, up ~1.5% (Investing.com); India price about Rs 1,34,763 per 10g (FXStreet).

Global right now

Europe is mixed-to-firm as the bond selloff cools: DAX 25,791 (-0.19%), FTSE 100 10,783 (+0.25%) on Google Finance quotes; Reuters reported the STOXX 600 rebounding after three losing sessions. US futures point mildly higher — Dow +0.27%, S&P 500 +0.16%, Nasdaq 100 +0.23% (Investing.com). Same-day Asia closing prints could not be cross-verified before publication, so they are marked n/a here; Japan was set up to open higher, with Chicago Nikkei futures at 64,735 and the US 10-year around 4.78% (Nikkei).

Data: today and next

India today: HSBC India Services PMI rose to 54.1 in August from 53.3, composite 54.3, with job creation at a 15-month high — but new orders grew at one of the slowest rates in nearly four and a half years, and manufacturing had already slipped to a five-year low of 52.8 (Business Standard / S&P Global).

Tonight and tomorrow: US initial jobless claims (205k forecast vs 203k), S&P Global US services PMI (56.8 vs 54.6), ISM services (54.2 vs 54.1), July trade balance (-$86.4bn) and Q2 productivity/unit labour costs (Investing.com). Wednesday's ADP showed just 38,000 jobs against a 49,000 consensus (Nikkei). Friday brings US non-farm payrolls, and markets are pricing a possible 25bp ECB hike (Reuters).

Sentiment and what to watch

Read: cautiously risk-on at the margin, defensive at the index level. Watch whether the retreat in global yields holds — that, more than anything, decided today's direction. Watch Brent: a move back above the six-week high revives the inflation trade and pressures Indian margins, while a slide back under $90 would relieve it. And watch tonight's ISM services and tomorrow's payrolls, because a soft labour print after the weak ADP is what would take Fed rate-hike talk off the table.
