Palo Alto (PANW) is down ~8% on a clean beat — the margin guide is why

Palo Alto Networks PANW selloff decoded

Palo Alto Networks beat on revenue, beat on EPS and guided FY27 above the street — and the stock is down ~8% at $332.30, from Tuesday's $362.08 close, as reported by 24/7 Wall St. Yahoo Finance had it as much as 10% lower intraday.

The quarter itself was clean. Q4 FY26 revenue $3.41bn, up 34% YoY, past the ~$3.35bn consensus. Non-GAAP EPS $1.02 against $0.98 expected. Next-generation security ARR $9.10bn, up 63%. Remaining performance obligations $21.2bn, up 34%. FY27 revenue guided to $14.10–14.20bn versus a street number near $13.84bn, EPS $4.16–4.19 versus ~$4.11.

So what broke it? Two numbers in the guidance, not the print.

1. The margin math

Non-GAAP operating margin was 29.2% in FY26. The FY27 guide is 29.5% — thirty basis points of expansion while revenue grows 23–24%. Management said why on the call: gross margin already slipped to 74.8% in Q4, down 100bps YoY, cloud hosting costs will grow faster than total revenue in FY27 as the mix shifts to SaaS, and rising memory and storage prices keep squeezing the hardware business. Adding roughly $2.7bn of revenue for 30bps of margin is close to no operating leverage at all.

2. The ARR step-down

NGS ARR just grew 63%. The FY27 guide is $11.075–11.175bn, or 22–23% growth. Most of that cliff is optical — the CyberArk and Chronosphere deals annualising out of the comparison. Jefferies figures that stripping ~$200m of Chronosphere and ~$70m of CyberArk net new ARR out of the quarter still leaves organic net new ARR accelerating to roughly 45% YoY from 17% the quarter before, and called it "the cleanest print for PANW in a while". BofA's read was blunter: the bar going in was unusually high, and the stock had already fallen 5.25% on Sep 1 before the numbers even landed.

The ripple

CrowdStrike fell 3% to $208.03 and Fortinet 3% to $157.51 on the same tape. The transmission is the cost line, not the demand line — the biggest platform vendor in security just told everyone that running detection at cloud scale gets more expensive faster than revenue grows. Fortinet carries the extra memory-and-storage hit on top, because it still ships physical appliances.

What would flip it

Q1 FY27, due in November, is guided to $9.54–9.56bn of NGS ARR. If PANW clears that and lifts the $11.075–11.175bn full-year range, the deceleration story dies and today looks like an overreaction. If it lands inside the range, the 22–23% guide stops looking like sandbagging.
