Why did Coach's parent Tapestry (TPR) crash ~16% — after beating?

Tapestry TPR earnings drop decoded

Tapestry (NYSE: TPR) — the owner of Coach, Kate Spade and Stuart Weitzman — cratered about 16% on Thursday, closing near $128.39 and shedding roughly $25 in a single session. The twist: it actually beat.

The beat everyone ignored. Fiscal Q4 (ended June 27) revenue rose 9% to $1.88 billion and adjusted EPS landed at $1.32 versus the roughly $1.28 Street estimate. Coach — the crown jewel — grew about 14% in constant currency. Full-year FY26 revenue hit $8.0 billion with EPS of $7.05, up 38%, and the board bumped the dividend 16%. On paper, a strong print.

So why the crash? Two separate things — don't blur them.

1) The FY27 guide came up light. Tapestry guided next-year revenue to $8.4–$8.5 billion (midpoint ~$8.45B), just under the ~$8.47B analysts wanted — and, more to the point, that's only mid-single-digit growth, a sharp cooldown from FY26's ~17% pro-forma pace. When a stock has run this hard, "in line to slightly light" gets punished like a miss.

2) Kate Spade is still bleeding. The brand's revenue fell about 7% in the quarter, and CEO Joanne Crevoiserat conceded the turnaround is "more gradual than we planned." That's the real sore spot: Coach is now doing nearly all the lifting, and the market hates paying a premium multiple for what's starting to look like a one-brand company.

The ripple. Watch Capri Holdings (NYSE: CPRI), which owns Michael Kors — the closest accessible-luxury handbag rival to Kate Spade. If mid-tier shoppers are cherry-picking the hottest name (Coach) and skipping the rest, Michael Kors' own turnaround gets harder, not easier. Tapestry just signalled the accessible-luxury customer is being choosy.

The one thing to watch. Tapestry's next report — fiscal Q1 FY27, due in early November. If Kate Spade is still shrinking and Coach can't hold double-digit growth, the "just Coach" worry deepens and that $8.47B FY27 bar looks shaky. If Kate Spade's decline finally narrows, Thursday's 16% gash may look like an overreaction to a genuinely good quarter.
