Why did Upwork (UPWK) crash ~15% — is AI eating the freelance economy?

Upwork (NASDAQ: UPWK) closed down ~14.7% at $8.39 on Tuesday — a fresh brush with its 52-week low of $7.44 — after the freelance marketplace paired a Q2 report with a guidance cut. It had already sunk ~21% in after-hours the evening before, and it's now off ~56% year-to-date.
The twist: the quarter itself wasn't the problem. Q2 revenue of ~$191.7M actually edged past estimates by ~$1.7M, even though it was still down 1.7% year-on-year. Adjusted EPS of $0.20 missed by a single penny. What gutted the stock was the forward look.
What actually changed
Management cut full-year revenue guidance to $730–750M, from $760–790M, and trimmed adjusted EPS guidance to $1.38–1.43 from $1.50–1.55. CEO Hayden Brown pinned the downgrade on two named forces: AI automation pulling work off the platform, and a hiring market that just isn't improving. The tell is under the hood — active clients fell ~4% to 763,000. A 5% rise in gross service volume per client (to $5,230) cushioned revenue, but a shrinking buyer base is the whole fear: if AI agents handle the small jobs companies used to post, Upwork's cut of that volume erodes.
The Street repriced fast: RBC cut its target to $9 from $20 and Scotiabank to $10 from $15, both Sector Perform.
The read-through: this is the cleanest "AI is eating the labour marketplace" print yet, and the obvious sympathy name is Fiverr (FVRR) — same take-rate model, same exposure to AI substituting for entry-level gig work. Watch whether Fiverr's next guide echoes the same demand softness.
The one thing that flips or deepens it: Upwork's own Q3 revenue guide of $176–184M is the number to judge next print. Clear it and the AI-doom narrative loosens; miss again and $7.44 stops acting like a floor — so watch whether the stock holds ~$7.90.
