Why did Microchip (MCHP) rip ~14% Friday after a quarter it grew 38%?

Microchip Technology (NASDAQ: MCHP) ripped about 14% on Friday to roughly $84.69 — its biggest single session in years — after a fiscal Q1 report (the June quarter) that finally put hard numbers behind the "recovery" analysts had been promising for a year.
The print: revenue of $1.48 billion, up 38% YoY and 13.2% sequentially, past the ~$1.46B street estimate. Non-GAAP EPS came in at $0.76 versus ~$0.70 expected — and up from just $0.27 a year ago. Operating margin swung to 22.7% from 3% in the same quarter last year.
But the spark wasn't the beat — it was where the growth came from. Data-center revenue jumped 97.8% YoY, nearly doubling, as Microchip's connectivity and storage silicon rode the AI buildout. Management flagged 14 PCIe Gen 6 design wins (12 switches, 2 retimers) and guided that business from ~$591M in 2025 toward ~$1 billion in 2026. That reframes MCHP from a sleepy auto/industrial analog name into an AI-infrastructure supplier — and it's the third straight quarter of growth after a brutal downcycle where sales had been shrinking ~12% a year.
Guidance sealed it: the September quarter is guided to ~$1.60B (up ~8% sequentially, ~40% YoY) with EPS around $0.93 — both above consensus — and gross margin recovering to 66–67%.
The ripple: the read-through is for the other analog/embedded names that sell into Microchip's exact auto + industrial customers — Texas Instruments (TXN) and Analog Devices (ADI). If MCHP's order book is genuinely bottoming, they're plausibly a quarter behind on the same recovery. The PCIe Gen 6 angle also feeds the "AI capex is broadening past GPUs into connectivity" thesis that lifts Astera Labs (ALAB).
The risk that flips it: the stock is now pricing a full multi-quarter upcycle after only three quarters of growth, and the September guide already bakes in ~40% YoY. Watch the next print in early November — if book-to-bill slips back below 1, or inventory days (175 last quarter, versus 184 the quarter before) start climbing again, the recovery narrative — and the re-rating — unwinds fast.
