Why is Zcash (ZEC) up ~18% today — while every stock market is shut?

Zcash (ZEC) is trading near $1,192, up about 18% in 24 hours and roughly 40% on the week, per CoinGecko. Coinbase's ZEC-USD tape opened the 24-hour window at $1,009.99 and printed a high of $1,220.62. Market cap is around $20bn — ninth-largest crypto on CoinGecko's ranking. It's Sunday, every equity market on earth is shut, and this is the thing moving.
Three things did it, not one
1. An ETF that didn't exist two weeks ago. Grayscale converted its Zcash Trust into a US spot ETF, ticker ZCSH, which began trading on NYSE Arca on Aug 25. The Block counts about $34.4m of net inflows through early September, with a best single day of $12.6m on Sep 2; net assets were around $414.7m as of Sep 3. Small money next to Bitcoin ETFs — but ZEC's float is small too, and this is a price-insensitive buyer that had no way to exist before August.
2. The shorts got run over. CoinDesk reported roughly $34.5m of ZEC shorts liquidated in Friday's advance alone (~$36.6m of total liquidations), the session ZEC first cleared $1,000 since its 2016 listing and peaked at $1,023. One trader, analyst Garrett Jin, wore an $18.5m loss on a $33.11m position. Futures open interest hit a record near $2.15bn.
3. A large buyer is circling. CoinDesk reports a Digital Currency Group subsidiary in non-binding talks to buy 200,000 ZEC — about 1.2% of supply.
The ripple
The listed way this shows up is Cypherpunk Technologies (NASDAQ: CYPH), the Winklevoss-backed Zcash treasury company. CoinGecko's treasury data has it holding 294,743 ZEC — 1.74% of supply — bought for $99m at an average $336. At $1,192 that stake marks around $350m. CYPH doesn't re-rate on a business; it re-rates on this coin, roughly $29m of book value for every $100 ZEC moves.
Miners are the odd one out. The Block's figures: network solrate went from about 25 GSol/s in late August to briefly over 30, so a Bitmain Antminer Z15 Pro now grosses roughly $708 per MWh — down about 3% from $727 on Aug 24, when ZEC was under $900. Coin up a third, mining revenue down. Hashrate is arriving faster than price.
What flips it
The DCG purchase is explicitly non-binding. If that walks, the biggest visible bid walks with it — and with open interest at a record, the leverage that just torched shorts is now sitting on the long side instead. The concrete level: whether ZEC holds the $1,000 shelf it broke on Friday. That's the floor the entire squeeze was built on.
