Why is the KOSPI down 5.2% today? Samsung and SK Hynix dragged it there

KOSPI chip-led selloff decoded

South Korea's KOSPI fell 5.2% to 6,515.97 in Wednesday trade — the sharpest drop in the region — and this one has two names written all over it.

Samsung Electronics dropped 6.9% and SK Hynix tumbled 7.9%. Those are the KOSPI's two heaviest constituents (together well over a quarter of the whole index), so two ~7% falls in stocks that size mechanically deliver most of a 5% index move by themselves — the other 200-plus names barely had to show up.

What actually hit them

This is Wall Street's AI-chip selloff crossing the Pacific. On Tuesday the Nasdaq sank 1.3% as the memory-and-AI complex led lower: Micron fell about 7% — one of the single heaviest drags on the S&P 500 — alongside Nvidia −2.3% and Broadcom −3.2%. Samsung and SK Hynix are the world's two biggest makers of the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) that feeds Nvidia's AI servers, so they trade as leveraged bets on exactly the data-centre demand thesis the market just started doubting.

There's a second, separate driver — worth keeping apart from the first. The 30-year US Treasury yield is near its highest level since 2007, and Brent crude jumped 0.9% to $91.83 as a US–Iran tanker deal keeps slipping. High yields punish the most expensive stocks hardest, and after their triple-digit runs this year the Korean chip names sit squarely in that bucket. So today is two things at once: a demand scare on memory and a valuation squeeze from rates — not a single tidy story.

The ripple

The read-through is direct, not hand-wavy: SK Hynix is Nvidia's primary HBM supplier, so if the bears are right that data-centre memory demand could "fizzle," SK Hynix's HBM order book — its single biggest growth engine — is the first line item that gets marked down. Micron's 7% drop overnight is the same trade wearing a US ticker.

What would flip it

Watch oil. Brent traded near $72.87 before the Iran war; a US–Iran deal that lets tankers move and pulls crude back toward there would ease the inflation-and-yield pressure squeezing high-multiple chip names — taking half of today's problem off the table. The other half is Nvidia's next data-centre guide: a strong number revalidates the HBM demand that Samsung and SK Hynix live or die on.
