Relief rally just hit after those Iran off-ramp signals
Man, you could almost hear the collective exhale across the trading desks this morning. One minute the Iran situation has everyone braced for impact, the next Trump’s signaling the whole thing could wrap in weeks and suddenly the tape is bidding like it’s 2021 again.
S&P 500 climbed to 6,343.72. Dow added 49 points to close at 45,216.14 with Boeing and Caterpillar doing the heavy lifting. Nasdaq lagged a bit at 20,794.64 in a weirdly mixed session. Classic relief move where risk comes back on and the stuff that benefits from stability leads.
I’ve seen this movie before. Geopolitical tension builds, everyone piles into defense names and oil, then the first hint of de-escalation triggers the mother of all squeezes. Traders who were short the indices or loaded up on hedges are getting torched right now. The psychology is pure: better to buy the rumor of peace than wait for confirmation.
What’s interesting is who’s leading. Boeing catching a bid makes sense if Middle East airspace worries ease and commercial aviation gets a tailwind. Caterpillar suggests the market is pricing in fewer supply chain headaches and more global capex. Meanwhile the Nasdaq sitting out the party tells me not everyone is fully convinced yet.
Second order effects are already showing up. Oil catching a bid lower, gold getting sold as safe haven flows reverse. If this de-escalation sticks, we could see inflation pressures ease further which is obviously constructive for multiples. But here’s the part that keeps me up at night: these geopolitical relief rallies can be viciously sharp in both directions.
The setup is simple but fragile. Bulls need the S&P to hold above 6,300 and ideally clear 6,400 with conviction. Any headline that suggests talks are stalling or some new escalation pops up and we gap the other way fast. I’ve watched too many of these “peace” bounces turn into traps when the next tweet or Iranian statement hits.
Positioning-wise, a lot of hedge funds were probably tilted defensively coming into this. The unwind is creating momentum that could carry us higher in the short term, but don’t confuse momentum with a new bull leg. I’m watching how the energy sector reacts and whether the VIX can actually settle down or if it’s just pausing.
Longer term this matters for rates and Fed policy too. Lower geopolitical risk premium usually means lower volatility and easier financial conditions. That’s the kind of environment where the indices can grind higher even without perfect earnings.
But let’s be real. We’re all one bad news cycle from this entire move reversing. I’ve got tight stops on any new longs I added and I’m not afraid to take profit quickly if the narrative shifts. Fifteen years in this game teaches you that hope is not a strategy, even when it’s hope for peace.
So what are you guys doing with this? Staying on the sidelines until it’s clearer, adding to longs on the dip, or already rotating out of the defense complex? Drop your thoughts below, especially if you caught the Boeing move this morning.
