Pre-Market Global Brief — Sep 01, 2026 | Nifty, Nasdaq, Nikkei, DAX & more

Risk-off into the September open: fresh US-Iran strikes at the Strait of Hormuz have pushed Brent back to $91, and that crude-plus-hawkish-Fed combination is the single biggest drag on India's start today.
Wall Street: oil spoils a winning month
US stocks slipped Monday even as August closed green. Per The Motley Fool, the Dow ended near 53,186 (-0.70%), the S&P 500 at 7,686 (-0.33%) and the Nasdaq Composite at 26,371 (-0.12%) — the S&P still up about 2.6% for August. The why: WTI vaulting past $90 revived inflation worries just as traders lifted September Fed hike odds to roughly 60-64% after Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole line that inflation is "running too hot." Tesla (+5.5%) and Strategy (+4.4%) bucked it; Amazon and Alphabet fell 2-2.5%.
Asia this morning
- Hang Seng 25,300, -1.04% — Tencent, Meituan and HKEX all lower; Shein's HK debut slid over 9% (Trading Economics).
- Nikkei 225 -0.46%; Kospi flat-to-soft after Monday's 6,820 close (+0.46%) (Business Standard, Trading Economics).
- Shanghai Composite 3,981.86, -0.11%, cushioned by a PMI beat; Shenzhen -0.9%.
Europe's prior close
Split and directionless (Trading Economics): DAX 26,421 (-0.56%), Euro Stoxx 50 6,476 (-0.16%), FTSE 100 10,824 (+0.29%) — the oil-heavy index the only real winner.
India lead
GIFT Nifty was around 24,167-24,189, down roughly 0.25%, signalling a soft-to-negative open (Business Standard, 5paisa). Nifty closed 24,080.40 (-0.39%) and Sensex 76,957.27 (-0.40%), though Bank Nifty rose 0.92% to 58,024.95 — the one pocket of strength. India VIX jumped nearly 5% to about 11.2. FIIs sold Rs 7,985.90 crore on Aug 31; DIIs absorbed Rs 4,588.90 crore.
Commodities, currency, yields
- Brent $91.27 (+0.91%), WTI $86.77 (+1.18%) — Brent +9% in a month (Trading Economics).
- Gold $4,447/oz, flat Monday but up ~9.7% in August, its best month since January.
- USD/INR 95.43; DXY 99.40 (-0.30%); US 10Y 4.78%, a two-basis-point rise.
Data due today
- India Manufacturing PMI (Aug): 52.9 vs 53.5 in July — the weakest factory reading since August 2021, with employment falling for the first time in 2.5 years.
- China manufacturing PMI 51.5 vs 50.9 prior, above the 51.0 forecast — mildly supportive for metals and China-linked plays.
- Eurozone flash CPI (2:30 pm IST; prior 2.9% headline, 2.5% core) and German retail sales.
- US ISM Manufacturing (7:30 pm IST; prior 55.6). A hot print hardens the September hike case, lifts the dollar and yields, and pressures the rupee and FII flows. Friday's US jobs report is the week's real event.
- Watch too for August GST collections and monthly auto dispatches from Maruti, Tata Motors, M&M, Bajaj and Hero — none released at the time of writing.
What it means for the India open
Expect a cautious, mildly lower start with energy and OMCs in focus — every dollar on Brent widens the import bill and squeezes downstream marketing margins. Rate-sensitives and IT face the tougher setup while US yields climb and the rupee sits near 95.4. Banks holding up is the one reason a gap-down need not become a trend day.
