Why is Tyson Foods (TSN) down ~7% today?

Tyson Foods TSN decoded

Tyson Foods (NYSE: TSN) fell about 7% at Thursday's open and was still down roughly 6.4% intraday near $51.6 — a whisker above its 52-week low of $50.57 — on a day the broader market was actually rallying more than 1% (CNBC, Investing.com).

The trigger wasn't a headline miss on the quarter. It was Tyson cutting its full-year guidance for the second time in about a month. Management now sees fiscal-2026 adjusted operating income of $1.85b–$2.05b, down from the $2.1b–$2.3b range it had set just weeks earlier, and trimmed expected revenue growth to 1.5%–2.0% from 2.5%–3.5%.

Where the money is leaking

It's the beef unit. Tyson now expects a beef operating loss of $625m–$775m this year, worse than the $500m–$650m loss it guided to in early August. The cause is specific and structural: one of the most severe U.S. cattle shortages on record is squeezing packer margins — Tyson buys live cattle and sells beef, and when cattle are scarce and dear while wholesale beef can't keep pace, the spread collapses. Tyson also flagged that falling cattle prices hit the carrying value of its live-cattle inventory, a second, more immediate markdown on top of the operating squeeze.

Chicken, the segment that's been carrying the company, got trimmed too — now guided to $1.85b–$1.95b from $1.9b–$2.05b — so the one reliable profit engine offers a little less cushion than investors thought.

The read-through

The cattle-cycle pain isn't Tyson's alone. Watch the other big protein names with beef exposure — Pilgrim's Pride (PPC) and privately-held Cargill/JBS USA operations face the same packer-margin math — while the flip side, ranchers and cow-calf operators selling into a tight market, are the ones capturing the high cattle prices doing the damage here.

The one thing that flips this: the cattle cycle. Beef margins won't heal until the U.S. herd rebuilds, and that's a multi-year process — so watch the USDA's next Cattle inventory data and monthly cattle-on-feed reports for the first sign of herd growth. Until placement and slaughter numbers turn, another guidance trim is the risk, not a recovery. And keep an eye on whether $50.57 holds — a break there is a fresh 52-week low.
