AeroVironment beat by 2x and fell. A day later it jumped 9.6%. Here is what changed overnight.

AeroVironment AVAV decoded

AeroVironment reported a big earnings beat on Wednesday evening. The stock fell. On Thursday it rose 9.6% to about $154.33, and at one point was up as much as 13%. Same numbers, opposite reaction, one day apart. That gap is the story.

What happened

AV — that's what the company calls itself — makes military drones and laser weapons. Fiscal Q1 results landed after the close on 9 September. Revenue was $480.5 million, up 6% year on year, against a street estimate near $456 million. Adjusted earnings were $0.59 a share, up 84%, when analysts expected about $0.25. More than double.

The stock closed down roughly 5% anyway, at $140.81 — the level Thursday's gain was measured from.

Why it moved twice

The release had two halves and the market read them in the wrong order.

Half one is guidance. Despite crushing the quarter, AV left the full year exactly where it was: revenue of $2.125–2.225 billion and adjusted EPS of $3.02–3.34. Traders hate that. A giant Q1 beat with no raise usually means management sees something soft later — and this guidance implies full-year adjusted EPS falls about 4%, even though Q1 EPS just jumped 84%. That sold it Wednesday.

Half two is the order book, and it took a night to sink in. Bookings hit $683 million, up 71% — a 1.4x book-to-bill, meaning for every dollar of revenue AV recognised it signed $1.40 of new work. Funded backlog reached a record $1.5 billion, up 37% in a year, with $1.4 billion unfunded behind it. Driving it: a $464 million LOCUST laser award — the US Army's first-ever production contract for a directed-energy weapon — plus a $500 million Titan counter-drone selection and a $117 million P550 deal.

The line that likely broke the bears: management now has visibility into 86% of its full-year revenue midpoint, up from 69% a quarter ago. Flat guidance backed by 86% visibility is a different animal from flat guidance backed by hope.

The business — today's news is one slice

  • Autonomous Systems: $346.0m, up 21%. Uncrewed aircraft grew 71% to $120m; precision strike (the Switchblade loitering munitions) grew 8% to $197m.
  • Space, Cyber & Directed Energy: $134.5m, down 21%. Space and directed energy fell 28%, cyber and mission solutions 16%.

So about 28% of the company shrank by a fifth this quarter. The laser headline lives in the segment that is currently contracting — that $464m is future revenue, not the revenue that just landed.

Is it expensive?

There is no trailing P/E to quote, because AV isn't profitable on a GAAP basis: it lost $0.10 a share in the quarter and roughly $5.40 over the trailing year, per Yahoo Finance. You're paying for the forecast, not the record.

On that forecast, stockanalysis.com puts the forward P/E near 45 on a market cap of about $7.8 billion. Rich in absolute terms — 45x prices in years of growth. But against the obvious alternative, Kratos Defense (KTOS), a similar-size drone-and-systems name at roughly $8.9 billion, which trades near 51x forward and 281x trailing, AV is the cheaper of the two on next year's earnings. It also sits about 63% below its 52-week high of $417.86, and is down roughly 38% this year.

Who it touches

  • Counter-drone peers — Kratos, Red Cat and Ondas feed off the same US Army budget lines. A first-ever directed-energy production contract sets the precedent for all of them.
  • India's defence names — Solar Industries, Zen Technologies and Paras Defence sell into loitering-munition and anti-drone programmes. Washington moving lasers from lab to production line is the strongest signal yet that this becomes a procurement budget, not a demo.

The one thing that flips it

Cash. AV expects negative free cash flow for the entire fiscal year, with capital spending of 12–14% of revenue. Growing a backlog isn't the same as getting paid for it — building capacity to deliver $2.8 billion of total backlog burns money first. If the second half brings the delivery slippage a shrinking directed-energy segment hints at, that flat guidance stops looking conservative and starts looking generous, and 45x forward has nothing under it.
