Post-Market Wrap — Jul 22, 2026 | How India & the world closed

Indian equities headed into Wednesday's close down for a third straight session, with the Sensex off close to 700 points near 76,750 and the Nifty slipping below 24,000, as a spike in crude oil and heavy selling in banks overwhelmed an otherwise upbeat global mood.
How India closed
Near the close the Sensex was down roughly 0.9% (around 76,750; previous close 77,470.11) and the Nifty 50 was under 24,000, off about 0.8% (intraday low 23,973.70), per Business Standard and The Week. The pain was concentrated: banking heavyweights HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and SBI led the drag, extending HDFC Bank's post-earnings slide after its Q1 net interest margin missed. Pharma also fell on a US phased-tariff plan for imported generics. India VIX eased 2.9% to 12.60 — the selling was orderly, not panicky.
Why it moved
The trigger was oil. Brent crude climbed toward a five-week high of $92.67 a barrel on an escalating West Asia conflict — tanker reroutes in the Red Sea and an incident near the Strait of Hormuz. India imports over 80% of its oil, so a spike stokes fears of a wider current-account deficit and imported inflation, which is why Dalal Street fell even as US and most Asian peers rose.
Winners & the tape
Autos bucked the sell-off on strong results — TVS Motor +3.7%, Bajaj Auto +2.9% — with Titan and Asian Paints also firm. Top losers included InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo), Cipla, Sun Pharma and Axis Bank. On flows, FIIs were net buyers of ₹1,650.16 crore on Tuesday (Jul 21); Wednesday's provisional print was not yet available.
Currency, commodities & global
- Rupee: under pressure from the oil bill, USD/INR around 96.4 (Jul 21, Trading Economics).
- Commodities: Brent ~$92.67; gold ~₹12,779/gram (FXStreet, Jul 22).
- Asia: mixed — Nikkei 225 -0.2% at 66,115.60; Hang Seng -1.1% at 24,866.67.
- US: Wall Street rallied Tuesday and futures stayed firm; on Jul 22 the S&P 500 rose 0.89%, Nasdaq +1.29%, Dow +0.74% (KuCoin). Europe traded little changed.
Data & earnings
Recent India prints underline the oil squeeze: the June trade deficit widened to $30.43bn (record imports as energy costs jumped), while June auto retail sales rose 21.83% to a record 25.57 lakh units (FADA). On the earnings calendar, Nestlé India, Dr Reddy's, BPCL, HPCL, IndusInd Bank, Adani Power and Eternal were among Wednesday's reporters; Infosys, IndiGo and Cipla report Thursday. Globally, the US delivers a data-heavy Thursday — Q2 GDP, core PCE, weekly jobless claims and durable goods orders.
What to watch tonight & tomorrow
Crude is the swing factor: any fresh Hormuz or Red Sea headline that pushes Brent higher keeps pressure on the rupee and oil-sensitive sectors, while a cooldown could spark a relief bounce. Thursday brings Infosys results and IT-sector guidance, a read on the export engine, plus the US GDP/PCE/jobless-claims cluster that will steer global risk appetite into Friday. Watch whether banks stabilise after the HDFC Bank-led sell-off.
