Why is Meta (META) up ~8%? It wants to rent out its AI compute

Meta cloud business decoded

Meta jumped about 8% on Wednesday after Bloomberg reported the company is building a cloud business to sell its spare AI computing power to outside customers.

Here's the plain-English version. Meta has spent tens of billions buying chips and data centres to train its own AI. Now it wants to rent out the capacity it isn't using — the same model that made Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud into money machines. The internal project is reportedly called Meta Compute, and it has two flavours: let developers tap Meta's AI models (think an AWS "Bedrock" clone), and sell raw computing power the way neoclouds like CoreWeave do (a neocloud is basically a landlord that rents out GPUs by the hour).

Why it's a big deal: this turns a giant cost centre into a potential revenue line, and it points Meta straight at the three cloud incumbents. The read-through cuts both ways — it's another buyer of Nvidia (NVDA) silicon and a fresh comp for the neocloud names, but the report weighed on hyperscaler stocks because Meta would be a new rival, not just a customer.

The one risk that flips it: this is a Bloomberg report of internal plans, not a launched product. Renting compute is a low-margin, capital-hungry grind, and Meta has no track record selling infrastructure to enterprises. If leadership downplays the timeline — or the economics look thin next to its own AI spending — the pop can fade as fast as it came.
