Why did Rollins (ROL) fall ~10% right after its 99th straight growth quarter?

Rollins Q2 miss decoded

Rollins (NYSE: ROL) — the Orkin-owning pest-control giant — fell about 9.5% in after-hours trading on Wednesday and is set to open sharply lower today, after a Q2 report that was, on the face of it, fine. For this particular stock, "fine" is the problem.

The numbers: revenue of $1.079 billion, up 7.9% year over year — the company's 99th consecutive quarter of revenue growth — but a touch short of the roughly $1.103 billion Wall Street modelled. Adjusted EPS landed at $0.32 versus the ~$0.344 estimate, about a 7% miss. Organic growth cooled to +5.7%, and adjusted operating margin slipped ~110 basis points to 19.5%.

So how does a ~2% revenue miss cost you nearly 10% of your market cap? Because Rollins isn't valued like a pest-control company — it's valued like a bond that compounds. It carries a premium multiple (historically in the 40–50x earnings range) precisely because the growth is meant to be metronomic and recession-proof: people don't stop paying to keep termites out of the house. The instant organic growth slows and margins tick down in the same quarter, the "pay any price for certainty" thesis gets questioned — and when the multiple is that stretched, even a small wobble forces a big de-rate. The softness showed up in the residential book (home pest + termite prevention, the bulk of revenue), hinting at a slightly more cost-conscious homeowner.

The ripple: watch Rentokil Initial (owner of Terminix), Rollins' biggest listed rival in North American residential pest control. If Rollins' organic growth is fading because households are trimming recurring home services, Rentokil's US residential business faces the identical demand question — on top of its already-bumpy Terminix integration.

The one risk that flips it: Rollins hosts its earnings call today. If management calls the residential softness timing/weather and reaffirms its high-single-digit organic-growth algorithm, a serial acquirer with 99 straight up quarters can earn the benefit of the doubt and this drop can snap back. If instead the organic-growth guide comes down on the call, the premium multiple keeps compressing from here.
