Why did Micron (MU) crash ~7% — right after a 5% pop?

Micron closed down about 7% on Tuesday, near $941 — the hardest hit of the memory names, one day after it had risen ~5% on a Musk comment about a memory bottleneck. This was a snap reversal, and the reason isn't what most people assume.
There was no memory-specific bad news. Micron walked into Tuesday up roughly 255% year-to-date and ~18% on the week — the single most-stretched name in the most-crowded corner of the market. So when a scare hit, it had the most air to let out.
The actual trigger — two separate things, kept separate
1) A WSJ report on Big Tech's hidden AI bill. The Journal totted up footnotes across nine large tech firms and found roughly $3 trillion of off-balance-sheet commitments, mostly tied to AI — growing faster than their ~$600bn of traditional capex and about triple what they owe on leases and long-term debt. That poked the "is AI spending sustainable?" nerve and traders sold the priciest AI hardware first.
2) A bond rout. The 30-year Treasury yield pushed to about 5.32%, a ~19-year high. Higher long rates squeeze exactly the high-multiple growth names that had run furthest. Micron was both. A minor added irritant: Netlist escalated a memory-patent fight at the ITC — real, but a footnote next to the macro move, not the cause.
It was a group move, not a one-stock wobble: SanDisk fell ~9% and Western Digital ~5% the same day.
Why it matters beyond Micron
Micron's growth engine right now is HBM — the high-bandwidth memory stacked onto Nvidia's AI GPUs. The WSJ story is, at its core, a question about whether the hyperscaler spending that funds those GPU orders is durable. If that capex gets trimmed, Micron's HBM order book is first in the firing line — that's the concrete channel, not vague "sentiment."
The one thing that flips it: watch the 30-year yield. It's the pressure valve here — if it keeps climbing past that ~5.3% high, names like MU stay heavy; if it cools, this looks like pure profit-taking that unwinds fast. The company checkpoint to circle is Micron's next fiscal-Q4 report and whatever it says about HBM pricing and volumes.
