Why is Unity (U) up ~15% today? The ad engine, not the game engine

Unity Software (NYSE: U) is up about 14.8%, trading near $40.72 on Thursday afternoon, as reported by Benzinga — one of the biggest single-stock pops on Wall Street today.
The trigger is a Q2 print that beat on every line that matters. Revenue landed at $546.5M, up 24% year over year, comfortably past the ~$514.6M analysts expected. Adjusted EPS came in at 28 cents — the Street was penciling in a 9-cent loss. Free cash flow jumped to $202M.
What actually moved the stock
Not the game engine Unity is famous for — the ad business. "Strategic" revenue rose 38% to $486.4M, and inside that, Grow Solutions, Unity's advertising arm now running on its "Vector" AI engine, grew 35% to $389M. That's the turnaround thesis finally showing up in the numbers: after years of ad-network stumbles, Unity's machine-learning ad matching is monetizing. CEO Matt Bromberg called it "arguably the best quarter in Unity's history as a public company," and guidance backed him up — Q3 adjusted EBITDA is guided to $185–190M, up 69–74% YoY.
The ripple
The read-through runs straight to AppLovin (NASDAQ: APP), the mobile ad-tech leader Unity has been chasing. APP slid to a 52-week low the same afternoon on a mixed quarter. So the tape is quietly rotating within mobile advertising: Unity's Vector engine winning share right as AppLovin's growth wobbles. The shared pool both fight over is app developers' mobile user-acquisition budgets.
The one risk that flips it
Unity's Q3 strategic-revenue guide of $540–550M only edges the ~$538.8M consensus — so the whole re-rate rests on Vector's momentum holding, not accelerating. Watch the next print in early November: if Grow Solutions can't hold roughly 35% growth, a stock that's swung from $16.78 to $52.15 in the past year can re-rate just as violently the other way.
