Why did Corning (GLW) jump ~7%? Verizon just pre-bought 80 million miles of fibre

Corning (NYSE: GLW) closed up about 7% at roughly $165 on Tuesday, touching $166.75 at its intraday high — an 8% pop at one point — after Verizon named it the supplier for one of the biggest fibre orders anyone has signed.
The actual number
This isn't "an order win." Verizon committed to more than 80 million miles of high-density optical fibre, cable and connectivity — including Corning's Contour Flow Cable — under a multi-billion-dollar agreement running 2027 through 2032. The dollar value wasn't disclosed. Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg framed the why: the company is "solidly on track to have more than 32 million fibre passings by the end of this year" and wants 40–50 million over the medium term, plus long-haul backbone for AI data centres.
Verizon itself barely moved — +0.8% to $50.46. That asymmetry is the tell: a five-year purchase commitment is a cost line for the buyer and a booked backlog for the one company that can actually draw the glass.
Why the market cared this much
Because Corning has spent 2026 being hammered for exactly this — demand it can't yet ship. In Q2 (reported 28 July) Optical Communications sales rose 32% to $2.07bn with segment operating income up 77% to $438m, and enterprise/data-centre connectivity was up 65%. Core EPS was $0.78, up 30%. And the stock still fell from $254.95 to $137.99 across July — a 45.9% month, no split, no spinoff — because the revenue line came in short of consensus. Management's own line has been "if we could make more, we could sell more." Verizon just pre-bought five years of that capacity, which is why a supply contract read as a growth event.
The ripple
The read-across hit the rest of the optical stack the same session: Coherent +2.9%, Ciena +1.9%, Lumentum +2%. The transmission is literal — 80 million miles of fibre in the ground needs transceivers, amplifiers and line systems at both ends, and those are the three names that sell them. Corning's order is their order book one layer up.
The one thing that flips it
Not a single dollar of this deal touches 2026. Corning guided Q3 to core sales of $4.9–5.0bn and core EPS of $0.85–0.89 when it reported on 28 July. Watch the Q3 print in late October: July proved this stock will drop 45% on a revenue miss even with the segment growing 32%. Miss that $4.9bn floor and the Verizon pop unwinds well before 2027 ever arrives.
