Post-Market Wrap — Sep 10, 2026 | How India & the world closed

Post-market wrap

India squeezed out a flat-to-positive close after three losing sessions, with banks absorbing an oil shock that has taken Brent above $100 a barrel — Business Standard reported the Sensex snapping its three-day losing streak with a gain of about 138 points and the Nifty finishing at 23,478.

How India closed

  • Nifty 50: 23,477.80, up 46.30 points (+0.20%) — as reported by 5paisa (prior close 23,431.50).
  • Sensex: up roughly 138 points, snapping a three-day slide — per Business Standard's market-close report.
  • Nifty Bank: broadly flat at 56,335.35 (+0.07%) on 5paisa's 2:33 PM IST reading — the day's late-session print was not verifiable at publication.
  • Nifty Midcap 100: 62,357.35, down 235.45 points (-0.38%), per ICICI Direct. A verified Smallcap 100 close was not available at the time of writing.

The split tells the story: heavyweight lenders held the index up while the broader market stayed defensive. Business Standard's live coverage had PSU Bank leading in early trade (up over 1%) with auto the weakest sector and pharma soft; SBI, Axis Bank and ITC were among Sensex gainers, with M&M, Eternal and Shriram Finance lagging.

Why: crude and the rupee

Brent is near $101 and WTI above $96 after Iran said it was prepared for "a more intense war," keeping a Strait of Hormuz risk premium in the price (Energy Connects; CNBC). India imports the bulk of its crude, so this lands directly on the trade deficit, inflation and margins for aviation, paints, chemicals and logistics. The rupee is the pressure valve: it settled near 95.11 on Wednesday and traded around 95.15–95.25 today, with traders describing RBI intervention as slowing the slide rather than reversing it (Trading Economics). Gold was quoted at $4,407.90/oz (Vested).

Flows and the global tape

Wednesday's provisional flows showed FIIs net sellers of ₹583 crore against DII buying of ₹1,509 crore (5paisa) — today's provisional figures were not published at the time of writing. Asia was heavier than India: Hang Seng -1.4%, ASX 200 -1.5%, Shanghai -0.3%, MSCI Asia Pacific -0.8% (Vested). US 10-year yields sat near 4.84%. Verified live European index levels were not available at publication, so we are not quoting them.

What to watch tonight and tomorrow

US August PPI and weekly jobless claims land at 8:30 am ET (about 6:00 pm IST) tonight, and US August CPI plus the preliminary University of Michigan sentiment reading arrive on Friday (Kiplinger). With the Fed in its blackout ahead of the September 15–16 FOMC, that CPI number is the last major input before the decision — and an oil-driven inflation print would matter more than usual for rate expectations and for the rupee. Domestically, watch whether banking strength can keep offsetting the crude drag, and how oil marketing and refining names (IOC, BPCL, HPCL, MRPL, CPCL) trade as Brent stays elevated. On the primary side, the NSE IPO's grey market premium was quoted at ₹222 with the exchange trimming its maximum valuation target by about 15% (India IPO).
