Pre-Market Global Brief — Jul 23, 2026 | Nifty, Nasdaq, Nikkei, DAX & more

A risk-mixed overnight session hands India a cautious open, but the single biggest driver is a fresh spike in crude — Brent back near $96 on renewed US–Iran escalation — pointing the Nifty to a gap-down start.
Wall Street: mixed as oil bites
US indices drifted lower on Wednesday as the jump in crude offset AI-chip optimism. Per Business Standard, the Dow finished near flat at 52,218.58 (−0.01%), the S&P 500 eased to 7,498.96 (−0.14%) and the Nasdaq slipped to 25,690.90 (−0.57%). The US 10-year Treasury yield sat around 4.64% (CNBC).
Asia this morning: chips lift the tape
Most Asian markets advanced on hopes regional chipmakers benefit from surging global AI spending. Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose about 0.99% and South Korea’s Kospi jumped roughly 3.49%; China’s Shanghai Composite hovered flat near 3,869 (Business Standard, Trading Economics).
Europe (prior close)
European bourses finished higher on an AI-sector rebound, with Germany’s DAX up about 0.7% near 25,011 (Trading Economics).
India setup: GIFT Nifty points down
GIFT Nifty was quoted around 23,884, down about 104 points, signalling a gap-down open for the Nifty50 (Business Standard).
Commodities, currency & yields
- Brent crude near $95.7/bbl, up about 1.8% — a six-week high; WTI above $88 (Business Standard, Bloomberg).
- Gold futures eased about 0.8% (Business Standard).
- USD/INR around 96.7, close to record lows; the dollar index (DXY) firm near 101 (Trading Economics).
What’s driving it
Oil is spiking on escalating US–Iran tensions — reports of tanker and Houthi attacks near Saudi Arabia and Trump’s threat to target Iranian infrastructure, amid a reported 12th night of US strikes (Business Standard). For a large crude importer like India, costlier oil pressures the rupee, oil-marketing-company margins and imported inflation.
On the calendar today
No major India macro print — but a heavy Q1 earnings day: Infosys, InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo), Cipla, Dr Reddy’s, Coromandel International, Indian Energy Exchange, Meesho, Go Digit and Cyient, among others. Three IPOs open — Xtranet Technologies, Indo-MIM and Lohia Corp. Globally, US weekly initial jobless claims are due tonight (~6 PM IST); the Fed’s next rate decision is on July 29. A soft claims print would revive rate-cut hopes and could cap the dollar — a small relief for the rupee.
What it means for the India open
Expect a cautious, gap-down start with oil the swing factor. Watch oil-marketing companies (HPCL, BPCL, IOC), paints and aviation on fuel costs, plus the rupee. Infosys results will steer Nifty IT, while any cooldown in crude could quickly flip sentiment.
