Post-Market Wrap — Jul 20, 2026 | How India & the world closed

Post-market wrap

India closed lower for a simple reason: the two biggest private banks reported and the market did not like what it saw — HDFC Bank and Axis Bank each fell about 5% after Q1FY27 numbers, dragging the financials-heavy indices down even as PSU banks and pharma held up.

How India closed

  • Sensex — 77,708.52, down 443 points (0.57%), as reported by Business Standard.
  • Nifty 50 — 24,238.50, down 96 points (0.39%), per Business Standard.
  • Nifty Bank — down roughly 1.3%, quoted around 57,738 by Kotak Neo; Business Standard reported the index sliding to an intraday low near 57,597.
  • Nifty Midcap +0.6% and Nifty Smallcap +0.16% — the broader market actually finished green (Business Standard).

That divergence is the story of the day. This was not a broad selloff; it was a large-cap financials selloff that the index arithmetic amplified.

What led and what lagged

Nifty Private Bank and Nifty Financial Services were the worst sectoral performers, while Nifty Pharma and Nifty PSU Bank were the best, per Business Standard. Top Nifty gainers were ICICI Bank, Tech Mahindra, ONGC, JSW Steel and Cipla; the biggest losers were Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, InterGlobe Aviation and Bajaj Finance.

The why: HDFC Bank's profit rose about 5% to ₹19,060 crore but its net interest margin contracted 13 bps, and leadership-transition ambiguity added to the discount, according to ICICI Securities and 360 ONE notes carried by Business Standard. Axis Bank's 23% profit jump to ₹7,632 crore leaned on lower provisions rather than core growth, with margins slipping. ICICI Bank was the clean quarter — NIM up 4 bps QoQ, strong asset quality — and rose about 2.5%. PSU names (PNB, Canara, BoB, SBI) gained 1–5%.

Currency, crude, commodities

  • USD/INR — the rupee opened at 96.53 and was 12 paise weaker at 96.42 in early trade versus the previous close of 96.30 (HDFC Sky / PTI). A verified official close was not available at the time of writing.
  • Brent crude — topped $90, rising as much as 3.8% to $91.42/bbl, the highest since June, on the ninth night of US strikes on Iran and thinning Strait of Hormuz traffic (Tickmill, Business Standard).
  • Gold — futures around $4,082/oz, down about 0.8%, as higher oil pushed real-rate expectations up (Tickmill).

Global right now

Nasdaq 100 futures were up about 0.5%, clawing back Friday's tech-led losses; Wall Street had closed Friday with the Dow down 0.77%, S&P 500 down 1.01% and Nasdaq down 1.4%. In Asia, South Korea's Kospi fell around 3% and Hang Seng rose 1.7%; Japan was shut for a holiday. US 10-year Treasury futures fell as investors marked up inflation risk from oil (Tickmill, Business Standard).

FII / DII

Today's provisional institutional flows were not published at the time of writing. For the previous session (17 July), FIIs were net sellers of ₹376.40 crore and DIIs net buyers of ₹1,017.90 crore in cash, per Trendlyne.

Data on the radar

No major India macro print landed today. Globally: Canada CPI today, Japan CPI Tuesday, UK public borrowing and labour data Tuesday and UK CPI Wednesday, Australia jobs Thursday, plus US Chicago and Kansas City Fed surveys Thursday and new home sales and building permits Friday. The ECB decision this week is expected to be a hold, with markets pricing roughly a 95% chance of a 25 bps hike in September. Friday brings flash July PMIs for the US, Eurozone and Japan — the first real read on whether $90 oil is lifting prices or denting activity. The Fed is in blackout, so data does the talking (Tickmill, TradingKey).

Sentiment

Cautious risk-off at the index level, but selective underneath. Crude has reclaimed the macro narrative, and last week's softer US CPI and PPI relief now looks conditional on oil stopping here.

What to watch tonight and tomorrow

Whether Brent holds above $90 is the single most important input — it drives the rupee, the import bill and how comfortable the RBI can sound. Watch if the FII selling that has been pressuring the rupee continues, and whether the midcap and PSU-bank strength that offset today's large-cap bank damage sticks for a second session. On the earnings tape, Bajaj Auto and the rest of the Q1 flow arrive this week, and Alphabet's Wednesday print is the fulcrum for the global AI trade that has been shaking semiconductor and IT sentiment.
