Why is Dollar General (DG) up ~8% while Dollar Tree fell — on the same morning?

Dollar General Q2 decoded

Dollar General jumped about 8% in premarket trade after its Q2 print, with StockStory logging the stock as high as $138.03, up 12.4%, at 7:23 am ET. Here's the part that makes it interesting: Dollar Tree reported the same morning, beat too, and fell about 3%.

What DG actually printed

  • Revenue $11.29bn, up 5.2% YoY, against a ~$11.18bn consensus.
  • Adjusted EPS $2.48 vs the ~$2.00 street number — a 24% beat.
  • Same-store sales +3.5%; operating profit +29.2% to $769.2m; gross margin up 127bps to 32.6%.

But the quarter isn't what moved it. The guide did. DG lifted full-year EPS to $7.80–$8.00 — a $7.90 midpoint against $7.39 consensus — raised its comp guide to 2.5–2.9% from 2.2–2.7%, and nudged sales growth to 4.0–4.3% from 3.7–4.2%.

So why did Dollar Tree go the other way?

This is the whole decode, and it isn't "the consumer is weak." Dollar Tree's comps were actually better — +3.7% vs DG's +3.5% — and its EPS of $2.70 blew past a $1.11 estimate. Two things killed it:

  • Q3 guidance of $0.80–$0.95 against $1.39 consensus — roughly 37% short at the midpoint.
  • Quality of profit. $1.31 per share of DLTR's quarter was tariff refunds, and its full-year guide leans on about 60 cents of them. DG's guide includes roughly 25 cents. Similar headline EPS, less than half the one-off crutch.

The market paid up for the guide it believes, not the beat it was handed.

The catch on DG too

Of that 127bps of gross-margin expansion, about 81bps came from tariff refunds. Strip those and the operating story is good, not spectacular. And DG's own raised full-year comp guide of 2.5–2.9% sits below the 3.5% it just printed — management's arithmetic implies the second half slows.

The risk that flips this: the Q3 report. If comps land under the 2.9% top of DG's own guide once the refund tailwind stops flattering margin, today's re-rating unwinds fast — and DLTR's Q3 guide is the early warning that the refunds are already rolling off.
