Post-Market Wrap — Sep 02, 2026 | How India & the world closed

Post-market wrap

Indian equities closed lower for a third straight session as a fresh escalation in the US–Iran conflict pushed Brent back toward $96 and revived the inflation trade — the Nifty 50 settled at 23,914.45, down 141.35 points (0.59%), after testing 23,786.80 intraday, per Investing.com.

How India closed

  • Nifty 50: 23,914.45, −141.35 pts (−0.59%), off a low of 23,786.80 — Investing.com
  • Sensex: 76,570.35, −373.93 pts (−0.49%) — Trading Economics. It was down more than 750 points (76,333) at the worst of the session, so the last hour clawed back roughly half the damage.
  • Bank Nifty: the weakest of the majors, off about 1.1% on the day (TradingView), as rising domestic yields squeezed bond-book sentiment
  • Nifty Midcap 100: 63,001.60, −332.90 pts (−0.53%) — Investing.com
  • Smallcap 100: around 0.8% lower in the session (Sunday Guardian, intraday)

Business Standard put the day's market-cap erosion at roughly ₹5 lakh crore.

Sectors and stocks — the split was all about crude

Nifty Auto was the worst sector, down about 2% (Business Standard), with Eicher Motors and Hero MotoCorp among the biggest drags — higher fuel costs hit demand sentiment right after August volume prints. IT and metals also fell hard, IT on the softer global growth read. Oil-sensitive names took the direct hit: BPCL, HPCL, Indian Oil, MRF, JK Tyre, CEAT, Asian Paints and IndiGo all fell, since crude is either their input cost or their fuel bill. The mirror image: Coal India rose roughly 4% as a domestic-energy substitute play, and Sun Pharma edged up 0.5%.

Flows, currency, commodities

  • FII/DII: today's provisional figures were not published at the time of writing. In the prior session (1 Sep), FIIs were net buyers of ₹1,143.38 crore and DIIs of ₹1,846.94 crore — Craytheon (provisional)
  • USD/INR: 94.97, weaker by 2 paise (Business Standard); the rupee had firmed to an eight-week high near 94.9 on 1 Sep on RBI intervention (Trading Economics)
  • Crude: Brent $94.81 (+0.17%), WTI $90.21 — Trading Economics. Brent jumped about 5% overnight and briefly touched $96.
  • Gold: ₹1,50,150 per 10g, down ₹1,579 (Business Standard)
  • Yields: India's 10-year pushed to about 7%, near a three-month high (Business Standard); the US 10-year was around 4.81%

Global right now

Per Trading Economics: Japan's Nikkei 225 was the global outlier, crashing 3.13% — the 10-year JGB hit 3% for the first time since 1996, a genuine repricing of the world's cheapest funding currency. Shanghai fell 0.97%, Hang Seng was flat (−0.07%). Europe is trading softer: DAX −0.49%, FTSE 100 −0.44%, CAC 40 −0.49%, Euro Stoxx 50 −0.25%. US: Dow −0.05%, S&P 500 −0.20%, Nasdaq −0.83%.

The data — India already out, US still to come

  • India Manufacturing PMI (Aug): 52.9 vs 53.5 in July — the weakest improvement in five years, with output and new orders at their slowest since Aug 2021 (Trading Economics). Services has been the offset at 54.5.
  • GST collections (Aug): ₹1,99,853 crore, up 14.8% year-on-year — a record (Forbes India)
  • Auto volumes (Aug): Tata Motors PV sales surged 56% to 67,753 units, widening its monthly lead over Mahindra (Autocar India)
  • Tonight (US): ADP employment change for August (consensus ~44K), July factory orders, and the Fed Beige Book at 6:00 pm ET
  • Tomorrow: US initial jobless claims (cons. 203K), ISM Services PMI (cons. 54.1), July trade balance, and a speech from Fed Governor Waller. Friday brings August nonfarm payrolls and the unemployment rate (cons. 4.1%).

Sentiment read

Clearly risk-off, but selective rather than panicked — the intraday recovery, flat Hang Seng and DII buying suggest positioning trimming, not capitulation. The uncomfortable part is the combination: oil up, yields up, currency soft. That is a stagflation-shaped setup, which is why the market punished cyclicals and rewarded energy rather than simply selling everything.

What to watch tonight and tomorrow

The single biggest variable is whether Brent holds above $95 or fades on any de-escalation headline out of the Strait of Hormuz — the auto, paint, tyre and aviation complex is now trading almost tick-for-tick against it. Second is the Beige Book and tomorrow's ISM Services print, which will shape whether the US bond market keeps pricing a hawkish Fed; a hot services number would push the 10-year higher and keep pressure on the rupee. Third, watch the 23,786 intraday low on the Nifty as the level bulls need to defend. Finally, today's FII cash figure, out after hours, will show whether foreign money used this dip to buy or to leave.
