Why is Dell up ~11% to a record today? Oracle's $90–95B capex guide plus a $640 RBC call

Dell record high decoded

Dell is up about 11% today, trading around $561 as reported by Investing.com, a new all-time high. Stocktwits had it touching above $567 intraday. CNBC puts the stock up nearly 350% in 2026. Two separate things lit the fuse, and a third explains why the bounce looks so big.

1. Oracle just put a number on its AI spending

On Thursday's earnings call, Oracle CFO Hilary Maxson guided fiscal 2027 capex to $90–95 billion, with net cash capex capped at no more than $70 billion (24/7 Wall St). She said that money goes to racks, cooling, power and networking gear. Reports differ on whether she named Dell and HPE outright, but they're the listed server makers that build those racks, and the market traded it that way: HPE also rose ~11% to about $61.49 and Super Micro ~7% to about $40.15.

2. RBC started coverage at Outperform, $640

RBC's David Paige opened on Dell with an Outperform and a $640 target, about 26% above the $506.62 price at initiation (Investing.com). His case covers AI servers plus the less glamorous stuff: storage, compute modernisation and PC refresh, with AI server mix pushing up margins in the infrastructure unit. The same analyst started HP Inc at only Sector Perform ($33), and HP still rose ~8%. That tells you the Oracle capex number, not the rating, was carrying the whole hardware group.

3. It's partly a snap-back

Dell fell 5.4% on Thursday after a $5 billion bond sale (roughly $23 billion of peak orders) and a filing showing Silver Lake sold close to $25 million of stock (Yahoo Finance). Today wipes that out and then some.

Why the backlog matters

Dell's Sep 1 results already showed what Oracle-style spending looks like on its books: record Q2 revenue of $47.0B (+58% YoY), $60.9B of AI server orders in one quarter, and a $95B AI backlog. It guided FY27 AI server revenue to $74B and total revenue to ~$192B. So a hyperscaler guiding capex higher isn't a vague tailwind here. It supports orders on top of a backlog that already covers more than a year of AI shipments at that guided pace.

The risk that flips it

Next Wednesday's Fed decision (Sep 16). 24/7 Wall St puts the odds of a hike above 85% after today's CPI. A stock that's quadrupled this year is the first thing traders trim if the Fed sounds more hawkish than priced. The line to watch is ~$507, where Dell sat before today's jump. A slide back through it means the Oracle/RBC pop got fully faded.
