Pre-Market Global Brief — Sep 14: NSE shut for Ganesh Chaturthi as Brent tops $107

Indian markets are closed today for Ganesh Chaturthi — and they are sitting out a rough session. Fresh drone strikes on Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline have pushed Brent back above $107 and dragged Asia sharply lower, with the Fed expected to hike on Wednesday.
India: shut today, back Tuesday
- NSE and BSE are closed across equities, derivatives, currency and commodity segments; normal trading resumes Tuesday, 15 September, per Goodreturns and HDFC Sky. The next holiday is 2 October.
- GIFT Nifty implied open: n/a — there is no domestic cash session to price against today.
US — Friday's close was the calm before this
- Dow 52,573.29, +509.19 (+1.0%); S&P 500 7,656.98, +65.28 (+0.9%); Nasdaq Composite 26,333.04, +251.31 (+1.0%) — as reported by AP/ABC News. That snapped a four-day losing streak, helped by oil easing and August CPI landing in line at 3.4% y/y (TheStreet).
- Since then futures have turned: S&P 500 -0.55%, Nasdaq 100 -1.2%, Dow -0.28%, per Investing.com, after Anthropic's Dario Amodei called for tighter AI safety guardrails and Middle East risk re-escalated. Dell (+10%) had led Friday's hardware bounce.
Asia now — risk-off, led by chips
- Nikkei 225 ~63,045, -1.5% to a six-week low; SoftBank -12% (Trading Economics).
- Kospi 6,694.56, -3.1%, with Samsung Electronics -3.4% and SK hynix -5.0% (The Korea Times).
- Hang Seng ~24,687, -0.5%, a fourth straight fall. Shanghai Composite ended Friday at 3,888.11, -1.2% (Trading Economics).
Europe (Friday close) & commodities
- DAX 25,569 (+0.8%), FTSE 100 10,650 (+0.4%), Euro Stoxx 50 6,325 (+0.9%) — Trading Economics.
- Brent ~$107.7 (+3.0%), WTI ~$103.2 (+3.2%) after Riyadh shut the pipeline that moves roughly 7m barrels a day around the Strait of Hormuz. Gold $4,332.90 (-0.4%).
- USD/INR 95.60; DXY 99.14; US 10-year 4.98%, near its highest since October 2023 (Trading Economics).
What to watch
- Today, even with markets shut: India's August CPI at 10:30 IST (prior 4.45%, consensus ~4.8%) and August WPI (prior 9.89%, consensus ~9.8%; UBI Research sees 9.34%). A hot CPI print with Brent at $107 hardens the case against near-term RBI easing.
- Tue 15: India August trade deficit (consensus ~$31.98bn), passenger vehicle sales, unemployment; US Empire State manufacturing.
- Wed 16: FOMC — consensus is a hike to 4.00% from 3.75%. Full diary: MarketChacha Calendar.
What it means for Tuesday's open
India reopens on Tuesday carrying two days of accumulated bad news: crude roughly $4 higher, US yields near 5%, and a rupee already at 95.6. Oil marketing companies, paints, tyres and aviation are the obvious pressure points, while upstream names and exporters get the offset. Watch whether today's CPI print gives the RBI any room at all — see the movers board once trading resumes.
