Veeva (VEEV) jumped ~17% today — the margin line, not the beat, is why

Veeva Systems (NYSE: VEEV) is up about 17% today, to roughly $286, after touching a gain of as much as 20.9% intraday. That's a $40bn+ software company adding a fifth of its value in one session — and unlike most of today's tape, it has nothing to do with Nvidia.
What actually happened
Veeva reported fiscal Q2 (quarter ended 31 July) with revenue of $928m, up ~18% year on year, against the ~$905m the street had penciled in. Adjusted EPS came in at $2.35 versus $2.22 expected. Billings were $760.9m, up 17.1%.
The line that did the real damage to the bears: adjusted operating margin went to 29.6% from 24.8% a year ago. Veeva grew revenue 18% and widened margins by nearly five points at the same time — that combination is what re-rates a stock, not the headline beat.
Management then raised the full year: revenue guidance to ~$3.69bn from ~$3.64bn, and adjusted EPS to $9.21 from $9.05. On the call they called it their best CRM quarter ever, with two more top-20 biopharma names signing onto Vault CRM.
Why this one matters beyond Veeva
The specific fear hanging over enterprise software right now is that AI eats seat-based subscriptions. That fear has been getting paid: Intuit dropped ~12% on Wednesday after guiding FY27 revenue growth down to 9-10% from 14%, and both JPMorgan and Bank of America cut it to Neutral on exactly that thesis.
Veeva is the counter-case, and it's a narrow one. Its software sits inside FDA-regulated clinical and commercial workflows — validated systems a pharma company cannot casually swap out for an AI agent, because the swap itself has to survive an audit. That regulatory moat is the reason a 17.6% grower gets a 29.6% margin, and it's why the read-through runs to other regulated-workflow vendors rather than to horizontal SaaS. If you own something because "Veeva proved software is fine," check whether your name has that audit trail or just has seats.
The one thing that flips it
Veeva guided Q3 revenue to about $933.5m — only ~0.6% above the $928m it just printed. That is a nearly flat sequential quarter after a 17% one-day move, and the stock now trades above the street's ~$255.80 average price target. Watch the Q3 print: if revenue lands at or below that $933.5m midpoint and operating margin drifts back toward last year's 24.8%, there is no valuation cushion under this gap.
