Why did 3M jump ~9% today? It raised full-year profit — and one division did almost all the work

3M shares rose about 8.7% in Tuesday trade, as reported by market data around 10:42 a.m. ET, after the company beat on Q2 and lifted its full-year profit outlook. That puts the stock near a four-year high — notable for a name that started the day roughly 1% down for 2026, per TS2.
What happened
Adjusted EPS came in at $2.40 against the $2.25 LSEG consensus, up 11% from a year earlier. Revenue rose 2.4% to $6.50 billion, ahead of the $6.41 billion estimate. Adjusted operating margin reached 24.9%, up 40 basis points.
But the number that moved the stock was the guidance. 3M raised full-year adjusted EPS to $8.80–$8.95 from $8.50–$8.70. The midpoint went up 27.5 cents. Analysts had penciled in roughly a 15-cent raise — so 3M beat the expected raise by about 12.5 cents. That gap is what a positive surprise actually looks like: not beating the quarter, but beating what the market assumed you'd promise next.
Why it moved — read the segments, not the headline
3M has three reportable segments since spinning off its healthcare arm. They did not have the same quarter at all, per 3M's unaudited segment data via TS2:
- Safety and Industrial — sales +8.2%, operating profit +16.4%, margin up 196 basis points. This is abrasives, adhesives, tapes, personal safety gear, electrical materials.
- Transportation and Electronics — sales +6.2%, profit +5.0%, margin down 29bps. Auto demand stayed soft; semiconductor and data-centre demand picked up the slack.
- Consumer — sales −1.8%, profit −6.0%, margin down 89bps. This is the Post-it and Scotch-tape side of 3M, and it shrank.
Now the concentration. Safety and Industrial was 48% of segment sales but delivered 94% of the total operating-profit increase — a $121 million rise — and 70% of the total sales increase, on $234 million of extra revenue. One division out of three is carrying this recovery.
The pricing detail most people will skip
3M now expects inflation of $150–175 million, up from an earlier $125 million estimate — and says price increases will fully offset it. That's the whole story of the margin line in one sentence: costs went up more than expected, and 3M was able to charge for it. Pricing power like that is what separates an industrial that expands margins from one that just passes through volume. Adjusted organic sales growth of 5.4% — versus only 1.2% last quarter — says demand supported those prices rather than resisting them.
Is it expensive?
3M's market cap sits near $90.4 billion. Its trailing P/E is roughly 28x per GuruFocus — against a 10-year median closer to 17.7x, so the stock is priced well above its own history. Compare with Honeywell (HON), the closest large-cap industrial comparison, at about 35.3x on a smaller $69.9 billion market cap. So 3M is the larger company at the cheaper multiple of the two — but neither is cheap against its own past. One more thing worth knowing: 3M's GAAP operating margin was 15.1%, versus the 24.9% adjusted figure everyone quotes. That ~9.8-point gap is where legal and restructuring costs live.
Who it touches
- Industrial peers — Honeywell, Illinois Tool Works and similar names get read across from 3M's pricing commentary, since it's an early-reporting bellwether for factory demand.
- Data-centre and semiconductor suppliers — 3M explicitly credited those end-markets for offsetting weak auto demand, another data point in the same build-out story.
- Anyone watching the consumer — a 1.8% sales decline in 3M's Consumer segment is a small but real signal about household spending on everyday goods.
What to watch
Two things. First, whether Safety and Industrial can hold that 196bps margin gain — the raised guidance implies second-half adjusted EPS of roughly $4.26–$4.41 against $4.54 delivered in the first half, so management is guiding to a softer back half even after the raise. Second, PFAS. 3M's outstanding "forever chemicals" liabilities remain the single item that can overwhelm an operating quarter, and they sit almost entirely outside the adjusted numbers above.
