Why did XRP just rip ~19% in a day?

XRP surge decoded

XRP just ripped +18.8% in 24 hours to an intraday high near $1.24 — its biggest one-day jump in months, per a Reuters snapshot cited by TechStock². At the peak that added roughly $12.4bn to XRP's market value, and it capped a week where the token climbed close to 30%.

Three separate things stacked up here — worth keeping them apart:

  • A macro spark. The US Treasury said it would double its long-dated bond buybacks to at least $4bn per operation. Lower yields make risk assets like crypto more attractive, and the whole complex bid up.
  • A policy tailwind. President Trump pushed Congress to pass the CLARITY Act — which would split digital-asset oversight between the SEC and CFTC — a day after a White House sit-down with crypto executives, as reported by Reuters.
  • A short squeeze. FxPro's Alex Kuptsikevich told Reuters the rally "was then fueled by a wave of short-covering" — bears forced to buy back to close losing bets, which stretched the move. XRP-specific, whales are reported to have scooped up ~300m tokens as exchange supply tightened.

The ripple into listed names: the exchanges and crypto-treasury stocks that earn on volume moved with it. Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) rose 7.58% to $172.35, adding about $3.2bn in market value; Strategy (MSTR) gained 7.81% and Circle (CRCL) 6.45%. That matters most for Coinbase specifically: transaction fees were 52% of its net revenue last quarter and that line fell 22% YoY — so it only really benefits if this burst turns into sustained trading volume, not a one-day spike.

The one thing that flips it: this was leverage-driven, not clearly demand-driven. Decrypt notes XRP ETF inflows slowed even as price ran, and futures open interest has already dropped more than 11% from the rally-day high. If the short-covering fizzles or Treasury yields climb back, the move can unwind fast — the honest tell is whether XRP holds above ~$1.20 through continuous weekend trading before US equities reopen.
