US Market Brief — Sep 08, 2026 | Futures, movers & what to watch

US futures are mixed and the Dow is the laggard, with the overnight driver squarely an oil shock: Houthi strikes on Saudi energy facilities halted operations at several sites, pushing crude to three-month highs just as traders price roughly a 60% chance the Fed hikes next week.
Futures now
- S&P 500 futures 7,710.00, -0.16% (Investing.com, delayed).
- Nasdaq-100 futures 29,603.50, +0.13% — tech is holding up best.
- Dow futures 53,174.00, -266 pts (-0.50%). TheStreet frames the softness as oil prices climbing and Middle East tensions rising.
Movers and the why
- Roivant Sciences (ROIV) +22% pre-market: subsidiary Pulmovant posted positive Phase 2 data for inhaled mosliciguat in pulmonary hypertension with interstitial lung disease and moved straight into Phase 3 (Investing.com).
- Boston Scientific (BSX) -2.3%: the company warned an August 25 cyberattack will have a material impact on Q3 and full-year results and said it is unlikely to meet prior sales-growth and adjusted-EPS guidance (Investing.com).
- CNBC's pre-market movers list today also flags Peloton (PTON) alongside ROIV and BSX; we could not verify the size or catalyst of that move before the open, so it is left as n/a.
Earnings today
A thin, retail-and-software slate. Before the bell: ABM Industries (ABM, $1.01 est.) and United Natural Foods (UNFI, $0.61). After the close: Casey's General (CASY, $6.75), ServiceTitan (TTAN, $0.35), Braze (BRZE, $0.15), Mission Produce (AVO, $0.12) — plus GameStop (GME) at about 4:02 PM ET, where the cash and margin update matters more than headline EPS (Kiplinger; 24/7 Wall St.).
Macro today — a light data day
Per the Trading Economics US calendar, nothing top-tier is scheduled: NFIB Small Business Optimism (Aug) at 6:00 AM ET, consensus 99.7 vs 99.3 prior — a beat would suggest small-cap hiring and capex intentions are holding up despite tariffs. NY Fed Consumer Inflation Expectations (Aug) at 11:00 AM ET, forecast 3.6% vs 3.6% prior — an uptick here matters more than usual given the oil move and next week's FOMC. Also: weekly ADP employment change, used-car prices, a 3-year note auction at 1:00 PM ET (prior 4.291%), bill auctions, and Consumer Credit (Jul) at 3:00 PM ET, consensus about $12B vs $14.17B prior. No Fed speakers are listed. CPI later this week is the real event.
Rates, dollar, commodities
- US 10Y ~4.79%, essentially flat on the day (Trading Economics).
- DXY ~98.98, -0.20%, a second down session as the yen firms.
- WTI $92.64, +1.26%; Brent $97.48, +0.33% — crude tested ~$94, the highest since June 3, after the Saudi attacks.
- Gold $4,403/oz, -0.04%, capped by rate-hike expectations.
Overnight global
Asia closed mostly lower — Nikkei 225 -1.71%, Hang Seng -0.39%, Sensex -0.73%, with Shanghai +0.20% the exception. Europe is flat to slightly lower: Euro Stoxx 50 -0.02%, FTSE 100 unchanged, DAX -0.21%, CAC 40 -0.11% (Trading Economics).
What to watch at the open
Watch whether energy names carry the tape while the rest of the market fades — a Dow down and Nasdaq up split usually means the oil bid is being read as a cost shock rather than a growth signal. Watch the 10Y around 4.80%: if crude keeps climbing and yields break higher into next week's FOMC, the rate-hike odds move and long-duration tech gives back its premarket edge. And watch the 11:00 AM inflation-expectations print for any sign that pump prices are leaking into household expectations.
