Silver jumped ~4% today while gold barely moved — here's why it's outrunning gold

What happened
Silver was the loudest metal in the room on Friday. Spot silver jumped +4.19% to about $64.08 an ounce, as reported by Trading Economics — its highest since June, per Yahoo Finance. On the very same day, gold rose just +1.29%, to around $4,295. So silver moved roughly three times as hard as gold in a single session. Zoom out and it's up about 10% in a month and 67% over the past year (Trading Economics).
Why silver moved more than gold
Both metals were riding the same trade: traders getting positioned before the US jobs report (Non-Farm Payrolls) due later today. A soft private-payrolls read earlier this week — ADP at just +44,000 jobs versus the ~65,000 the street expected (TD Securities, via FXStreet) — trimmed the odds that the Fed hikes rates again in September. Fewer expected hikes means lower bond yields and a softer dollar, and that's a tailwind for metals that pay you no interest to hold them. Add fresh safe-haven demand from renewed Strait of Hormuz tensions, and there's a bid under the whole precious-metals complex.
Silver just amplifies that move. It's a far smaller, thinner market than gold, so the same macro nudge swings its price harder — that's the simple mechanics behind why a +1% gold day so often lands as a +4% silver day.
The industrial twist
Here's the leg gold doesn't have: silver is half precious metal, half factory input. Solar panels alone eat up roughly a sixth of yearly silver demand, with more going into EVs, electronics and data-centre gear. So silver rides two horses at once — the fear trade and the industrial-demand trade — and when both pull the same way, it runs. At Friday's levels (~$4,295 gold, ~$64 silver, per Trading Economics), it takes about 67 ounces of silver to buy one ounce of gold — a ratio bulls track closely, because in past metal rallies it has compressed as silver plays catch-up.
Who it touches
- Winners — silver miners. Hindustan Zinc, India's largest silver producer, earns more on every ounce it refines; global primary-silver names benefit too.
- Squeezed — silver buyers. India's solar-module makers such as Waaree Energies and Premier Energies use silver paste in their cells, so a pricier metal nibbles at margins; electronics makers and jewellery importers feel it as well.
- Households. Silver coins and wedding-season buys get costlier, and silver ETFs — a fast-growing slice of Indian demand — mark up right along with the spot price.
The one risk that flips it
Today's jobs number. NFP is expected at +80,000 for July after +57,000 in June, with unemployment steady at 4.2% (FXStreet). A hot beat would revive September Fed-hike bets, lift the dollar and yields, and the metals would sell off — with silver, the higher-beta one, likely falling the hardest. A calmer Strait of Hormuz would also pull out the safe-haven bid.
What to watch
The 8:30 am ET payrolls print and how the market reprices the Fed's September path; whether silver can hold above the $60 line; and the gold-silver ratio — if it keeps sliding under 67, silver is still leading.
