Why did Marvell (MRVL) rally today — up as much as 8% before closing +5.5%?

Marvell Technology (NASDAQ: MRVL) closed up about 5.5% at $234.33 on Monday — and was up as much as ~7.8% intraday, one of the day's standout large-cap chip moves.
Here's the twist: the spark wasn't Marvell news at all. It was a Mizuho supply-chain note out Sunday (Aug 16) flagging a stronger-than-expected ramp of Nvidia's next-gen VR200 (Rubin) systems. More VR200 racks mean more high-speed optical and co-packaged-optics content per rack — and that's exactly what Marvell sells. Mizuho also pegged CoWoS advanced-packaging capacity growing 75%+ in 2027, the very bottleneck that's been capping Marvell's custom-silicon (XPU) output.
Two sell-side notes piled on: UBS's Timothy Arcuri flagged Marvell's optical content inside Nvidia's Blackwell and Rubin systems and argued its custom-ASIC work for Microsoft's Maia chip is being underrated; GF Securities' Alicia Yap pointed to the industry's shift to co-packaged optics after Nvidia's Spectrum-X CPO switches hit mass production.
The fundamentals under the pop are real: Marvell's Q1 FY27 data-center revenue was $1.83B, up 27% YoY, and management raised its FY27 interconnect-growth outlook to more than 70% YoY.
Two separate things — don't blur them. The Mizuho note is why Marvell specifically outran the tape. The whole chip complex also caught a bid on macro: OpenAI committed to a 4.25-gigawatt Ohio data center (~$38–60B of spend per gigawatt, much of it chips, memory and networking), and Bloomberg reported Anthropic's Q2 revenue jumped ~14x to more than $11.5B. That lifted everyone; the VR200 read-through is what made Marvell a leader, not a follower.
The ripple
It ran straight through the interconnect layer: Credo (CRDO) +8.3% and Ciena (CIEN) +5.2% rode the same VR200 read-through, because they sell the same optical and retimer content into AI racks. The transmission is Marvell's customer list — Nvidia optical, Microsoft Maia, Amazon Trainium: faster VR200 shipments mean more content dollars booked per rack.
The one risk that flips it: Marvell trades around 59x forward earnings, so there's little cushion. The concrete trigger to watch is earnings on Aug 27 — if the interconnect guide doesn't keep pace with that 70%+ bar, this analyst- and note-driven pop can unwind just as fast. (Prediction market Polymarket currently puts a beat near 75%.)
