Post-Market Wrap — Jul 27, 2026 | How India & the world closed

Post-market wrap

Indian equities roared back on Monday, with the Sensex jumping 776 points and the Nifty reclaiming ~23,996 to snap a five-session losing streak — the trigger was a sharp slide in crude, as Brent slipped back below $90 after the US and Iran paused their weekend strikes, reviving risk appetite.

How India closed

  • Sensex: 76,835.78, up 776 pts (+1.02%) (Business Standard)
  • Nifty 50: ~23,996, up 229 pts (+0.96%) (Business Standard / India TV)
  • Bank Nifty: 56,693.50, up 101.5 pts (+0.18%) — lenders lagged the broad rally
  • Broader market outran the benchmarks: Nifty Midcap ~+1.1% and Smallcap ~+1.3%, with roughly 2,000 NSE advances against ~300 declines

Why it moved

Crude fell about 5% back below $90 — down from a two-month high — after Washington paused its attacks on Iran over the weekend and Tehran said it had halted retaliation. Cheaper oil eases India's import bill, rupee pressure and inflation risk, so beaten-down names bounced. Steady domestic-institution buying and firmer global cues did the rest, though resistance around the 24,000 mark kept a lid on the upside.

Sectors & stocks

Led: Nifty IT, Media and Realty. Lagged: Oil & Gas — falling crude squeezes upstream producers. Top gainers included IndiGo (up ~3% early), Eternal, Infosys, Asian Paints and Bajaj Finance; early laggards were UltraTech Cement, ICICI Bank and Sun Pharma.

Flows

Today's provisional FII/DII figures were not yet published at the time of writing. In the prior session (Jul 24), FIIs net sold ~₹3,893 cr while DIIs net bought ~₹5,454 cr — domestic buying has been the cushion under the recent slide.

Currency & commodities

  • Rupee: firmer — USD/INR eased toward ~96.2 intraday (from ~96.4) as oil dropped (Trading Economics / Investing.com)
  • Brent crude: back below $90/bbl (Trading Economics)
  • Gold: ~$4,090/oz (+~1%); MCX 24-carat around ₹1,43,900 per 10g (HDFC Sky / Trading Economics)

Global snapshot

  • Europe (open): higher — Euro Stoxx 50 up ~1.1% (Trading Economics)
  • US futures: pointed up (Dow futures ~+500 pts, Nasdaq futures ~+1.7%) on the oil slide (CNBC)
  • Asia (close): Nikkei +0.5% (~64,931); Hang Seng over 1% higher (CNBC)

On the calendar

No first-tier India print landed today; month-end brings July auto/vehicle sales (from Aug 1) — early FADA data show retail up ~28.6% YoY for Jul 1–23 — and the July F&O expiry falls Thursday. Globally, tonight's US durable goods (Jun, f/c +1.6%) and the Dallas Fed index open a heavy week: the two-day FOMC (Tue–Wed) delivers its rate decision Wed, Jul 29 (no dot plot); Thursday brings US Q2 advance GDP (f/c +2.3%; Atlanta Fed GDPNow ~1.7%), June core PCE (f/c +0.1% m/m, +2.6% y/y) and jobless claims (f/c 195k); plus China month-end PMIs and Eurozone Q2 GDP & flash CPI.

Sentiment

Risk-on relief — cooling Middle East tensions and tumbling oil, backed by domestic buying. But it's a cautious bounce heading into the Fed and Thursday's expiry, with 24,000 the level bulls need to reclaim.

What to watch next

Whether Brent holds under $90 is the swing factor — it feeds directly into the rupee, oil marketers and inflation math. Watch if the Nifty can decisively clear 24,000 or stalls again at resistance. The Fed decision on Wednesday sets the tone for global risk, and Thursday's F&O expiry could add volatility. Month-end auto numbers will test whether the demand momentum flagged by early July data is real.
