Why did Coca-Cola drop 4%? Ransomware just switched off its US milk plants

Coca-Cola KO fairlife ransomware decoded

Coca-Cola closed Friday at $81.51, down 4.02% (-$3.41), per The Motley Fool's quote data. For a $365bn dividend stalwart that most people own precisely because it doesn't do this, a 4% day is a genuine event.

The cause isn't sugar taxes or a soft quarter. It's ransomware.

What actually happened

After the close on Thursday 16 July, Coca-Cola filed an 8-K with the SEC saying its dairy subsidiary fairlife found unauthorised third-party access to some of its systems — including its production-related systems — in a ransomware event. As a result, fairlife's US production is temporarily suspended. Canada is still running. The company says product quality and safety are unaffected, and it has notified law enforcement.

The detail that matters to investors is that phrase "production-related systems." Most corporate hacks hit the back office — email, HR files, payroll. This one reached the part of the network that runs the machines, so the fix isn't just restoring data, it's restarting physical plants. fairlife makes ultra-filtered milk and Core Power protein shakes, and by its own figures turns over more than $3bn a year.

The ripple

Every packaged-food and beverage company with a connected factory floor just got handed a costed example of what an operational-technology breach looks like — expect it quoted in cyber-insurance renewals and plant-security budgets for the rest of the year.

The one thing that flips it

Duration and data. If the lines restart within days, $3bn of revenue inside a group doing roughly ten times that is a rounding error and the 4% comes back. If a ransomware gang surfaces claiming stolen data, this stops being an outage and becomes an extortion-and-disclosure story — and Coca-Cola reports Q2 earnings later this month, so management will have to put numbers on it. As of Saturday, no gang has claimed the attack, and Coca-Cola hasn't said whether any data was taken. The company itself told the SEC it has not yet determined whether the incident is reasonably likely to materially affect it.
