$4.09 gas in a month? Iran conflict is already rewriting the inflation script

Just saw the update and had to pause. National average regular gasoline is now at $4.09 a gallon. One month ago it was $3.11. That's not a creep higher, that's a straight sprint.

The Iran situation is the spark. Supply worries, Strait of Hormuz tension, and oil reacting exactly how you'd expect. This isn't some abstract geopolitics headline anymore. It's showing up at the pump and it's going to echo.

Amazon is already rolling out fuel surcharges on deliveries. Smart, but it tells you how quickly these costs get passed along the chain. Mortgage rates have hit a seven-month high at the same time, layering higher borrowing costs on top of everything else. Grocery prices are the next obvious domino as transport and energy expenses work their way through the system.

What matters here is the second-order pressure. We were hoping energy would stay tame and help keep CPI in check. This reverses that in a hurry. Consumer wallets take the first hit, then margins, then potentially demand destruction if it lingers. The Fed's path gets more complicated if inflation reaccelerates from the energy side while growth slows from the spending side.

Traders are already positioning around it. Energy names have been catching bids but the broader market is watching for any signs this spreads or de-escalates. The speed of the move from $3.11 to over $4 is what has people uneasy. These aren't slow grind higher prices. This is event-driven and can reverse just as violently on any diplomatic breakthrough.

I'm watching how retail spending data reacts in the next few prints and whether this sticks above $4 or gets faded. Higher-for-longer energy costs change a lot of assumptions that were built over the last year.

Anyone else recalibrating their inflation outlook on this? Or is this just another spike that gets absorbed?
