US Market Brief - Sep 14: Nasdaq futures -1.65% on AI slowdown call, Brent $108

US market brief

US futures are pointing to a rough open, and for once the trigger came from inside the AI trade itself: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei used a weekend essay to argue the industry should slow the pace of frontier model development — with OpenAI's Sam Altman broadly agreeing — and chip stocks are paying for it, just as Brent tops $108 and the 10-year knocks on 5%.

Futures now

  • Nasdaq-100 futures 28,901.75, -1.65% — the epicentre (Yahoo Finance)
  • S&P 500 futures 7,607.25, -0.68%
  • Dow futures 52,880, -0.23% — the value/energy tilt is cushioning it
  • VIX 17.83, +12.6%; gold 4,353.80, -1.25%

Two forces, one direction: an AI-safety headline that questions the growth runway for compute, and an oil shock that argues for higher rates. Dow futures down only a quarter-percent while the Nasdaq drops 1.65% tells you this is a rotation, not a wholesale risk-off.

Pre-market movers

Semis are the damage — the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) was down about 5% pre-market, per AOL/Investopedia's market open roundup.

  • Chips lower on the slow-down call: Nvidia, AMD, Intel, Marvell -7.6% and Lam Research -8% (TheStreet). SK Hynix and Samsung memory names fell in Asia overnight on the same story.
  • Cybersecurity bid — the counter-trade: CrowdStrike +5.4%, Palo Alto Networks +5.1%, ServiceNow +4.7%. A world that governs AI harder is a world that spends more on guardrails.
  • Oracle -5% after founder Larry Ellison cancelled a planned $7.5bn share sale.
  • Corning -9.2% on a $2bn equity offering — dilution, plain and simple.

Earnings & events today

A quiet corporate day. Salesforce opens its Dreamforce conference — watch for AI-agent monetisation detail given the day's theme. Lennar reports Wednesday, which lands the same afternoon as the Fed.

Macro today

Light data day — per Kiplinger's calendar there are no noteworthy US releases scheduled for Monday. The week front-loads nothing and back-loads everything: Empire State Manufacturing Tuesday 8:30am ET; August Retail Sales, import prices, business inventories and NAHB housing Wednesday, then the FOMC decision, the Summary of Economic Projections and Chair Kevin Warsh's press conference at 2:00/2:30pm ET; weekly jobless claims, Philly Fed, housing starts and building permits Thursday; industrial production, capacity utilisation, Fed Governor Bowman and Leading Indicators Friday. Futures put roughly 85-89% odds on a 25bp Fed hike Wednesday — which would be the first increase since 2023. A hike with a hawkish dot plot validates the bond move; a hike paired with "one and done" language is the relief valve equities are hoping for. Calendar: marketchacha.com/calendar.

Rates, dollar & commodities

  • US 10Y 4.99%, +2bp — highest since 2007. 2Y at 4.66% (highest since mid-2024), 30Y above 5.36% (Trading Economics).
  • DXY 99.67, +0.55% — higher yields plus a haven bid.
  • Brent above $108 (+3%), WTI $102-103 (+2.3-3%) after Saudi Arabia shut its East-West pipeline following drone attacks, and a merchant vessel was struck in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. Hormuz flows have fallen to roughly 7m barrels a day from about 20m pre-conflict (Euronews, CNBC).
  • Gold 4,353.80, -1.25% — selling off despite the geopolitics, because real yields are winning.

That last line is the whole macro story: the East-West pipeline was the workaround for Hormuz. With both impaired, the inflation impulse is a supply problem the Fed can only answer with demand destruction — hence a 10-year at 4.99% and gold lower.

Overnight global

Asia closed mixed and soft: Japan's Nikkei -1.17% to 63,261, now -8.6% over the past month, while Hong Kong's HK50 edged +0.10% to 24,830. Europe is lower in the session: Euro Stoxx 50 -1.09%, DAX -0.43%, while the energy- and defensive-heavy FTSE 100 is +0.70% to 10,725 — a near-perfect illustration of the rotation the US is about to import (Trading Economics).

What to watch at the open

Watch whether the semi selloff stays contained to chips or bleeds into the broad index — if the S&P holds its shallower loss while the Nasdaq keeps sliding, this is rotation into energy and value rather than a de-rating of equities. Second, watch the 10-year: a clean break of 5% would be the first since 2007 and would change the discount rate every high-multiple name is valued on. Third, watch whether the cybersecurity bid holds through the cash session or fades as a knee-jerk.
