Why did PhysicsWallah jump ~6% today? Its first big brokerage initiation, decoded

PhysicsWallah had a loud Friday morning. The stock climbed as much as 6% to an intraday high of ₹128.19 on the BSE and was changing hands near ₹127 around midday, as reported by Business Standard and Inc42. Two separate things landed on the same morning, and it's worth keeping them apart.
What actually happened
First: Motilal Oswal Financial Services started covering the stock — its first formal research initiation, with a Buy rating. Second, and unrelated: 4.14 million shares changed hands in block deals, roughly ₹525 crore worth at the ₹127 level. The buyers and sellers weren't disclosed.
Here's the bit the headline skips. A brokerage initiation isn't just an opinion — it's plumbing. PhysicsWallah only listed in November 2025, and plenty of institutional mandates simply can't buy a name until a covering analyst publishes a model on it. The first big house to start coverage effectively opens a door. That's why an initiation can move a young listing more than the same call would move an Infosys.
Why Motilal is bullish — with numbers
The thesis isn't vibes. India's education market is roughly ₹15–16 trillion, and online penetration is wildly uneven: about 20% for JEE/NEET prep, but under 1% for foundation courses, state boards and government exams. That gap is the whole bet. The brokerage models online revenue compounding at 28% a year through FY30 and the offline business at 20%, off a base of 353 operating centres. It values the offline arm at 15x FY28 EV/EBITDA and the rest at 1x FY28 EV/Sales. (We don't publish price targets — the reasoning is the useful part.)
The business — it's not one thing
- Online — ₹549 crore last quarter, up 33% YoY. The YouTube-to-paid-course funnel, 100 million+ subscribers deep.
- Offline — 353 physical coaching centres. Capital-hungry, but it's where the higher ticket sizes live.
- K-12 and early learning — ₹105 crore, up 88% YoY. Small base, fastest growth.
In Q1 FY27, total revenue was ₹1,054 crore, up 24.4% YoY. EBITDA flipped positive at ₹52 crore, against a ₹21 crore loss a year earlier. The net loss narrowed about 30.5% to ₹88.3 crore, and management expects to be profitable at the net line by Q3 FY27.
Is it expensive?
P/E doesn't work here, and you should be suspicious of screeners that show one. PhysicsWallah still loses money at the bottom line, so its trailing P/E prints as an absurd number — a figure that tells you nothing. Use book value instead: it trades around 7.4x P/B at a market cap near ₹36,800 crore. Compare that with NIIT Learning Systems, a profitable listed education company at roughly ₹3,200 crore, a P/E of 26.8 and about 4x book. PhysicsWallah is roughly eleven times NIIT LS's size while still not earning a net profit. That's a growth price, plainly. For context on the shareholder journey: the IPO went out at ₹109, opened at ₹143.10 on debut, and the 52-week range runs ₹77.72 to ₹161.99.
Who else this touches
- The 2025 new-age listing cohort — anything freshly listed and thinly covered gets a read-across on how much a first initiation is worth.
- Listed education names like NIIT Learning Systems, Aptech and Career Point — a big-house Buy on the sector's largest player pulls eyes back to a corner of the market that had gone quiet.
- Offline coaching real estate and franchise operators — 353 centres growing at a modelled 20% is a physical footprint story, not just an app story.
The one risk that flips this
Net profitability by Q3 FY27 is a company expectation, not a delivered number. EBITDA turning positive is real progress, but the ₹88.3 crore net loss is still the loss. If offline expansion keeps eating the operating leverage that online is generating, the profitability date slips — and a 7.4x book multiple on a loss-making business is exactly the kind of valuation that doesn't wait around. The block deals are a second reminder: large holders can and do sell, and more supply can arrive without warning.
What to watch
Whether the ₹52 crore EBITDA holds through the seasonally weaker quarters, the pace of new centre additions versus same-centre economics, and whether a second brokerage follows Motilal with its own initiation. One Buy is a door opening. Two is a trend.
