Why is GPT Infraprojects up ~5% today? The same ₹484 crore bridge has now moved it twice

What happened GPT Infraprojects traded at ₹119.13 , up 4.9% , at 3:17 pm IST on Friday, after touching ₹123.32 intraday — about 8.6% above Thursday's close of ₹113.56. Volume ran to 29 lakh shares . The trigger: a ₹483.72 crore railway bridge contract from Rail Vikas Nigam , filed with the exchanges at 6:36 pm on Thursday , after the market had shut. Why it moved — the same bridge has now moved this stock twice The company already told the exchanges about this project on 2 September — but that filing said it had been declared L1 , "first lowest" bidder, at ₹483.7 crore. The stock jumped about 11% that day, to an intraday ₹119.13. L1 i…

Why did CMS Info and cash-logistics stocks jump ~7% today? Blame a new UPI fee

What happened India's cash-logistics stocks — the companies that physically move currency and refill ATMs — got a jolt on Wednesday. CMS Info Systems (NSE: CMSINFO) rose as much as 7.4% to Rs 239 before fading to about +4% at Rs 232 by mid-afternoon, and smaller peer Radiant Cash Management jumped as much as 8.9% to Rs 39.28 (NDTV Profit clocked the intraday spike near 10%). Security-and-cash player SIS Ltd added about 1% . The odd part: this is a digital-payments story lifting cash stocks. Why it moved On 15 September the NPCI, which runs UPI, confirmed India will start charging a Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) of 0.4% on person-to-merchant UP…

Patanjali Foods jumped 7.4% today on a court win it didn't actually get

What happened Patanjali Foods was the biggest gainer on the NSE today, at ₹363.70 , up 7.43% , as reported by Moneycontrol around 15:15 IST. It opened at ₹339.05 against Tuesday's close of ₹338.55 — so almost the whole move happened after the bell, not at it. Day range ₹337.50 to ₹367.40. Mint, citing NSE data, put volume at about 176 lakh shares and market cap at ₹39,482 crore at 1:45 pm. Why it moved — two separate things One: a court order that wasn't about this company. On 15 September a Delhi High Court bench of Justices Dinesh Mehta and Rajneesh Kumar Gupta quashed seven Income Tax Appellate Tribunal orders for assessment years 2013-14…

SIAM's August data: PV sales +36.5% to a record — while car exports halved

India's trade deficit narrowed to $26.86bn — but the number that matters is $9.41bn

The Commerce Ministry put out August's trade numbers at about 2:54pm IST today, and the headline looked like a clean win: the goods deficit shrank to $26.86 billion from $31.98 billion in July. Economists tracked by TradingEconomics had penciled in about $33 billion . So it beat by roughly $6bn. But the $26.86bn isn't the number that decides what happens to the rupee. Here's the one that does. The numbers Merchandise exports came in at $43.81 billion , up 26.12% from $34.74bn a year ago. Merchandise imports were $70.67 billion , up 14.11% from $61.96bn. Exports grew nearly twice as fast as imports, which is what compressed the gap, as reporte…

Why did Tata Chemicals lock a 20% upper circuit today? The RBI said no to Tata Sons

What happened Tata Chemicals opened at its 20% price band and never came off it, finishing locked at ₹734.90, up 19.99% . Its high and its low for the day were the same number — buyers at the limit, nobody selling into them. Business Standard and Business Today both carried it at +20%, near ₹734.50 intraday. Nothing changed in the soda ash business today — the trigger was a regulator's letter about a company Tata Chemicals owns a small slice of. Why it moved On 11 September the RBI rejected Tata Sons' application to surrender its registration as a core investment company, holding the request "cannot be acceded to" (Business Standard).…

Why did Nifty IT jump ~5% today while US chips fell?

India's beaten-down IT pack came roaring back on Tuesday. The Nifty IT index jumped as much as ~5% in early trade and was up 4.02% at 30,084 by late morning, with the pack adding roughly ₹1.2 lakh crore of market value in the opening hour (Business Standard, Business Today). The heavy lifting came from the giants that dominate the cap-weighted index: HCLTech +5.96%, Infosys +4.53% and TCS +4.50% , with Mphasis +5.16%, Tech Mahindra +4.93%, LTIMindtree +4.40% and Wipro +2.99% along for the ride. Coforge was the lone red name, down 1.49%. The twist: the same news that sank US chips lifted Indian IT There's one catalyst here, not two — and it cu…

Why did Diamond Power Infrastructure lock a 5% upper circuit today?

A small-cap cable maker just got locked at its daily ceiling before most people finished their morning chai. Diamond Power Infrastructure (NSE: DIACABS) was frozen in a 5% upper circuit at ₹388 today after telling the exchanges it had bagged a fresh order from the Adani group. Here's what's actually going on — and why the reaction is bigger than the order. India inflation decoded: retail 4.82%, wholesale 9.92% — the gap is the story

India's markets were shut for Ganesh Chaturthi, so nobody got to trade this. Two inflation prints landed anyway, and read together they say something neither says alone. The numbers Retail inflation (CPI) rose to 4.82% year-on-year in August from 4.45% in July, as reported by MoSPI — a shade above the 4.8% consensus Trading Economics tracked. The food index (CFPI) did the lifting, climbing to 5.95% from 5.52% . Rural inflation hit 5.23% (from 4.84%), urban 4.31% (from 3.96%). Inside food it was a vegetable story — onion +48.27% , ginger +73.82% , garlic +43.60% , offset by tomato −31.09% and potato −13.14% . One non-food category ran hottest…

Weekly thread (Sep 14): What's the one data point you're watching this week?

Happy Monday 👋 Markets throw a hundred numbers at us every week, and most of them are noise. So here is this week's question: what is the one data point you are actually watching, and why does it matter to you? Inflation, a results date, crude, the rupee, a rate decision, a jobs print, your own SIP balance — anything counts. Name one number — just one, the one you would check first Add a line on why it matters to you personally, not why it matters in general Not sure which number to pick? Say what you are confused by — someone here will help And please reply to someone else's number too, not just mine — that is how the good discussions start…

Why did SRG Housing Finance crash 20%? The NHB says a third of its loan book may not have real borrowers

What happened SRG Housing Finance (NSE: SRGHFL) is at its 20% lower circuit . Groww shows the stock at ₹195.00, down ₹48.75 or 20.00% from Wednesday's close of ₹243.75 , taking market cap to about ₹374 crore . The trigger is a Business Today report that the National Housing Bank (NHB) has flagged suspected fictitious loan accounts at the company worth ₹300–400 crore . Set that against the company's own reported AUM of ₹1,076 crore as of June and you get the number that did the damage: roughly one-third of the loan book is in question. Why it moved The specific finding, per the report, is not late repayment. It is that NHB found loans recorded…

Why did Graphite India jump 16% today? A US rival hiked electrode prices 30%

Graphite India was the loudest thing on the screen today. The stock jumped 16.11% to ₹852.55 from a previous close of ₹734.25 , touching ₹870 intraday — a fresh 52-week high, comfortably past the old ₹802.40 mark, as reported by Groww and Business Today. It did that on a day the Sensex was down 361 points. When a mid-cap runs 16% into a falling market, something specific happened. It did. What happened The trigger wasn't Indian at all. Why is Sterlite Technologies circuit-locked for a third straight day? A ₹20,000 crore FY29 target, decoded

Sterlite Technologies (NSE: STLTECH) hit its 5% upper circuit for a third straight session on Tuesday, at ₹825.60 against Monday's close of ₹787.65 — a fresh 52-week high, on a market cap of about ₹42,500 crore (Business Today, 11:49 AM IST). An upper circuit means the exchange won't let the price rise further that day; buy orders simply sit unfilled. Three in a row means demand kept outrunning the cap. The stock is up 707% in 2026 and 356% in six months . Off its January low of ₹84.65 it had gained 786% as of 4 September (Business Standard). What set it off On 4 September STL put out a three-year plan it calls Lakshya : revenue of ₹20,000 cr…

Why did Syrma SGS jump 12% to a record high? It was not the new plant

Why did HFCL lock its 5% upper circuit today? Its order book more than doubled

What happened HFCL closed up 5% at ₹242.95 , from a previous close of ₹231.40 — and it got there by locking its 5% upper circuit , as reported by Business Today. An upper circuit isn't just "the stock rose 5%." It means the exchange's daily price band was hit with buyers still queued and nothing left to buy. The move stopped because the rulebook stopped it, not because demand ran out. It happened on a red day, too: the Sensex fell 382.62 points (-0.50%) to 76,132.81 and Nifty IT dropped over 2% , per Business Standard. Why it moved The trigger was paperwork. HFCL filed its FY26 annual report and 39th AGM notice on 5 September , and Mo…

Why did Zee Entertainment fall ~6% today? A CBI FIR against its founder

Zee Entertainment fell again on a founder story — but the company itself isn't the one charged. That gap is the whole point, so let's do it properly. What happened ZEEL dropped about 6% on Monday, touching a low of ₹86.70 and trading near ₹86 , as reported by Business Today. The trigger was a CBI FIR against Subhash Chandra , Zee's founder and promoter, filed on 5 September. Why did PVR Inox drop ~8% today? It wasn't the buyback

PVR Inox was Monday's worst large-cap story on the street, and most of the one-line explanations floating around have the cause wrong. Here's what actually happened. What happened PVR Inox fell about 8% , hitting an intraday low of ₹1,125.70 on the NSE — its sharpest intraday fall in six months — on roughly 1 million shares traded across the NSE and BSE, as reported by Business Standard and Business Today.
