Why did Antelopus Selan Energy jump another ~11% today? Two small oilfields, decoded

Antelopus Selan Energy decoded

What happened

Antelopus Selan Energy (NSE: ANTELOPUS, the old Selan Exploration Technology) was at ₹1,053.95 this afternoon, up 10.81%, after touching a new 52-week high of ₹1,075.10 — as reported by ICICI Direct. Upstox showed the same move at ₹1,051.55 at 2:55 pm. And this is the second big day, not the first: it closed Wednesday at ₹951.15, up about 19.9% from ₹792.65.

Volume tells you how frantic it got. Roughly 1.62 crore shares traded, against a share count of about 3.5 crore implied by the ₹3,706 crore market cap at that price. Close to half the company changed hands in a session.

Why it moved

On 1 September the company told the exchanges that the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons, under the oil ministry, had awarded it two onshore contract areas under Discovered Small Field Bid Round-IV, communicated by a DGH letter dated 31 August 2026. The two are KG/ONDSF/KG ONLAND/2025 in the Krishna Godavari basin of Andhra Pradesh, and CB/ONDSF/CAMBAY ONLAND/2025 in the Cambay basin of Gujarat. Both are revenue-sharing contracts.

Worth knowing what a "discovered small field" actually is, because the name undersells it. These are pockets of oil and gas that the state explorers already found and drilled, then shelved as too small to be worth their time. The government re-auctions them with the geology already proven. So the winner skips the expensive, terrifying part — the "is there anything down there" part — and goes almost straight to development. For a producer this size, two of those is not a rounding error.

The bit the headline misses

The market isn't only paying for acreage. It's paying for what a barrel is worth right now. Brent was around $94.52 today per Trading Economics, held up by the Strait of Hormuz standoff. That is the real engine under the June quarter: revenue ₹133.1 crore and net profit ₹54.3 crore, up 42% on the March quarter, at an EBITDA margin near 70% — while output was basically flat at 1,705 boepd versus 1,758 boepd the quarter before (ScanX). Profit multiplied on price and an accounting change (amortisation revised down by ₹11.93 crore), not on pumping more oil. That leverage works in both directions.

The business

  • Development rights to three producing Gujarat oilfields — Bakrol, Lohar and Karjisan — selling crude to refineries and gas to local industrial buyers, per Screener.
  • An existing KG-basin foothold, the Dangeru and Mukkamala area, held 100%.
  • Bakrol infill drilling with 9 of 10 planned wells drilled, full production guided for the September quarter.

Today's award adds ground to what is, for now, three Gujarat fields and one KG toehold.

Is it expensive?

At ₹1,053.95 it trades on a P/E of about 25 at a ₹3,706 crore market cap (ICICI Direct), with ROCE of 21.2% and ROE of 15.9% (Screener). For a producer earning those returns, 25x is fair rather than frothy. Now the obvious listed comparison: Hindustan Oil Exploration (HOEC), a ₹2,198 crore small E&P, trades at a P/E of 87.5 on an ROE of 2.34%, with trailing profit down 79%. On earnings, Antelopus is dramatically the cheaper of the two — but only because crude is currently doing a lot of the earning. Framing, not a recommendation.

Who else this touches

  • Asian Energy Services — Oilmax Energy won a DSF-IV area of its own (GK/OSDSF/GKOSN/2025) on a letter of award of the same 31 August date, and its merger into AESL is at final hearing before the NCLT.
  • ONGC and Oil India — DSF acreage is built from discoveries they made and left undeveloped, so these rounds monetise their shelf.
  • Onshore drilling and oilfield-service names working Gujarat and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The one risk that flips it

The contracts are not signed yet. The formal revenue-sharing contracts still have to be executed with the government, and nothing comes out of the ground until they are. Beneath that sits the bigger one: at 1,705 boepd this is a price story wearing a growth story's clothes. If the Hormuz standoff eases and Brent slides back into the $80s, that 70% margin compresses quickly, and 25x stops looking like the cheap side of the trade.
