India factory growth hits a 5-year low: PMI 53.5 — what it hands RBI on Wednesday

The numbers
India's factory engine is still running — just not as hard. The HSBC India Manufacturing PMI, compiled by S&P Global, slipped to 53.5 in July from 54.2 in June, per the release reported by ANI and FXStreet. That undershot the 53.9 flash estimate and marks the weakest reading since August 2021 — nearly five years.
One thing the headline hides: PMI is a diffusion index. It doesn't measure how much output grew — it measures how many firms saw things improve. So 53.5 doesn't mean factories shrank. Anything above 50 means more of them are still expanding than contracting. The drop just says the growth is spread across fewer companies than a month ago.
What it means
The softness is a domestic demand story. New orders and output kept rising, but total sales grew at one of their slowest rates in over four years, and input buying hit a 31-month low. Hiring cooled for a third straight month. The bright spot came from abroad: export orders picked up, with firms flagging stronger demand from Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, Nepal, South Africa, Thailand and the UAE.
Prices tell a split story too. Input-cost inflation eased to a five-month low — good — but firms pushed output charges up faster to protect margins. Translation: companies are absorbing less and passing more on to customers. That's the detail RBI will be squinting at.
Who it touches
- The RBI, Wednesday: cooling domestic demand and softer input costs hand the doves an argument two days before the rate decision — but quicker output-price inflation is the wrinkle that argues for patience.
- Bond yields & rate-sensitive sectors: a weaker growth pulse tends to pull yields down and helps banks, NBFCs and real estate if it nudges RBI dovish.
- Capital-goods & industrials (L&T, ABB India, Siemens, Cummins): their order books track exactly this factory-capex cycle, so a slower expansion is a caution flag.
- Export-tilted manufacturers — engineering goods, pharma, auto ancillaries with an overseas mix — are the relative winners as domestic orders wobble but foreign demand firms up.
- Consumption-facing names: the soft patch in domestic orders is the read-through to watch.
What to watch
The confirm-or-flip moment is close. The RBI MPC decision lands Wednesday, 6 August (10:00 IST) — this PMI is one input into that call. Right after, the Services PMI shows whether the slowdown is factory-only or broader, and July CPI mid-month tells you if those rising output charges are already leaking into inflation. A PMI that keeps sliding toward 50 changes the whole conversation; a bounce says July was noise.
