Why is GPT Infraprojects up ~5% today? The same ₹484 crore bridge has now moved it twice

GPT Infraprojects mover decoded

What happened

GPT Infraprojects traded at ₹119.13, up 4.9%, at 3:17 pm IST on Friday, after touching ₹123.32 intraday — about 8.6% above Thursday's close of ₹113.56. Volume ran to 29 lakh shares. The trigger: a ₹483.72 crore railway bridge contract from Rail Vikas Nigam, filed with the exchanges at 6:36 pm on Thursday, after the market had shut.

Why it moved — the same bridge has now moved this stock twice

The company already told the exchanges about this project on 2 September — but that filing said it had been declared L1, "first lowest" bidder, at ₹483.7 crore. The stock jumped about 11% that day, to an intraday ₹119.13.

L1 is not a contract. It means your quote was cheapest in the tender, and the client still has to finish its checks and issue a formal award. Most convert; some get re-tendered, trimmed or cancelled. Thursday's filing is that conversion, and it says so in its own words — the announcement is made "in furtherance to our earlier L1 intimation made on September 2, 2026." Fifteen days between the bid and the binding order, and the stock was re-rated on both.

What the order actually is

  • ₹483.72 crore including GST, but ₹409.94 crore excluding it — the bigger number makes the headlines, the smaller one is what can reach the P&L.
  • Bridge No. 544: a 32-span open-web steel girder bridge over the Mahanadi, for the 3rd and 4th lines between Nergundi and Barang, Khurda Road division, East Coast Railway.
  • Execution: 1,095 days from the appointed date — roughly ₹137 crore a year on the ex-GST figure.

That is about 32% of the company's ₹1,506 crore market value — transformative-sounding, but spread over three years it is around 11% a year of its ₹1,279 crore of trailing sales.

The business

This is not a pure bridge builder. Screener.in describes GPT Infraprojects as a civil and infrastructure contractor that also makes concrete sleepers for railways, with the infrastructure segment at about 95% of revenue — bridges, roads, metro and industrial work. It also builds through a wholly owned subsidiary, Alcon Builders and Engineers, which filed two wins of its own this month: ₹114.82 crore on 9 September and ₹85.53 crore on 12 September. With the RVNL award, September has brought ₹684 crore of announced orders.

Valuation

Per Screener.in, the stock is on a P/E of 15.3 at a market cap of ₹1,506 crore, with book value of ₹47.7 a share, about 2.5x book. Its own five-year P/E band runs from 8.1 (March 2023) to 40.4 (July 2024), median 15.1 — so today's multiple sits on that median. For scale: Texmaco Rail is at a P/E of 21.4 on a ₹4,651 crore market cap, Ircon International at 19.8 on ₹10,336 crore. GPT is far smaller but reports higher returns on capital — ROCE 21.4%, against 11.2% and 9.27%.

Who it touches

  • Structural steel fabricators — 32 spans of open-web girder is real tonnage, ordered across three years.
  • Alcon Builders, the subsidiary now carrying over ₹200 crore of its own September wins.
  • Railway EPC peers — Texmaco was up 2.7%, Ircon 1.9% and RVNL 4.2% on Friday afternoon. Those are separate moves, not consequences of this contract.

The risk that flips it

The order book is not turning into revenue yet. Outstanding orders were reported at ₹4,992 crore, close to four times annual sales, yet Q1 FY27 revenue fell 3.4% year-on-year to ₹302 crore. Profit still rose (PAT ₹24.6 crore, up 4.9%; EBITDA ₹47.5 crore, up 28.4%) — margin did the work, not volume, and a 1,095-day bridge will not change that next quarter. Two more items sit in the filings: promoter holding is 50.8% pledged per Screener.in, and on 16 September the company circulated notice of an NCLT-convened meeting of shareholders and creditors, directed by the Kolkata bench.

In Indian infrastructure, L1 is an auction result, not a contract. The award filing is the one that binds — and it often lands weeks later, after hours. See the rest of today's movers.
