Why did Nifty IT jump ~5% today while US chips fell?

India's beaten-down IT pack came roaring back on Tuesday. The Nifty IT index jumped as much as ~5% in early trade and was up 4.02% at 30,084 by late morning, with the pack adding roughly ₹1.2 lakh crore of market value in the opening hour (Business Standard, Business Today).
The heavy lifting came from the giants that dominate the cap-weighted index: HCLTech +5.96%, Infosys +4.53% and TCS +4.50%, with Mphasis +5.16%, Tech Mahindra +4.93%, LTIMindtree +4.40% and Wipro +2.99% along for the ride. Coforge was the lone red name, down 1.49%.
The twist: the same news that sank US chips lifted Indian IT
There's one catalyst here, not two — and it cut in opposite directions. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call to “pace the frontier” of AI development, echoed by OpenAI's Sam Altman and xAI's Elon Musk, spooked AI-hardware names on Monday (Nvidia fell ~3.4%, Arm ~9.7%, Intel ~5.6% as capex-cycle fears flared).
For India's services firms the read is the mirror image. A slower frontier means less risk that AI makes their legacy managed-services and app work obsolete overnight — and it gives enterprise clients who'd paused decisions the visibility to restart cloud, transformation and governance projects. Choice Institutional Equities framed it as a “more measured AI cycle” that extends the monetisation window for IT vendors; the same day, US software peers like Cognizant, ServiceNow and Accenture also firmed while pure-AI names sold off.
Concretely, the transmission runs through deal pipelines: if wait-and-watch clients unfreeze budgets, that shows up as higher order bookings (TCV) for Infosys and TCS over the next couple of quarters — the thing that had been missing while AI-disruption fear hung over the sector.
The risk that flips it: the US Fed's rate decision on September 16. Indian IT earns the bulk of its revenue from North America, so a hawkish Fed and higher US yields would squeeze the very discretionary tech budgets this rally is betting will thaw. Several desks flagged this as a sentiment-driven bounce rather than a fundamental turn — so watch tomorrow's Fed tone before reading too much into one green session.
