Operational Performance: 5-Year AUM CAGR Comparison
5-Year Mutual Fund AUM Growth: Who's Leading the Race?
I recently looked at how three big financial institutions have grown their mutual fund businesses over the last 5 years. Here's what the numbers show:
5-Year AUM CAGR (Growth Rate):
• ICICI Prudential AMC: 22.55%
• Kotak Mahindra Bank: 20.33%
• Axis Bank: 12.51%
What does AUM growth actually mean?
AUM stands for Assets Under Management. When this number goes up year after year, it means more people are trusting the company with their money. It's a sign of a healthy, growing business.
A higher growth rate usually means:
- More investors are putting money in
- The company is attracting new customers
- They're doing well in a competitive market
- More potential earnings from fees
What the numbers tell us:
ICICI Prudential is growing the fastest at 22.55%. That's strong, consistent growth over 5 years.
Kotak Mahindra isn't far behind at 20.33%. They've built a solid mutual fund business that keeps expanding.
Axis Bank is at 12.51%. Still growing, but at a slower pace compared to the other two.
But here's something important to keep in mind:
This number is great for understanding the mutual fund business, but don't use it alone to judge a bank's overall health.
If you're looking at a bank, you also need to check:
- Loan growth
- Deposit growth
- CASA ratio (cheaper deposits)
- Net interest margin (how much they earn from loans)
- Bad loans (NPA)
- Capital adequacy (safety buffer)
- ROA and ROE (how efficiently they use money)
A good investor looks at everything together—not just one number.
