Post-Market Wrap — Sep 15: Sensex drops 778 pts as defence index cracks 5%

Post-market wrap

India opened up and closed down: a 587-point Sensex gain at the bell evaporated into a 778-point loss, and the biggest single wound was a 5% collapse in the defence pack after an expected India-Russia deal at the BRICS summit failed to materialise.

How India closed

  • Sensex 74,003.82 — down 777.94 pts (-1.04%). Business Standard headlined the close "Sensex falls 778 points; realty, metal top sectoral losers".
  • Nifty 50 23,118.60 — down 279.50 pts (-1.19%) from Friday's 23,398.10.
  • Bank Nifty 55,794.75, -1.43%; Nifty Midcap -1.67% and Smallcap -2.07% in afternoon trade (Business Standard) — the broader market took the harder hit.

Monday was a Ganesh Chaturthi holiday, so this was the first session since Friday — and it began well, with the Sensex opening +587.87 at 75,369.63 (India TV). Business Standard's read on the reversal: benchmarks "erased all gains as firm oil prices dented the risk appetite, while IT shares limited loss."

Sectors and movers

Realty and metals led the fall; Nifty IT was the one major sector index in the green. Defence did the real damage — the Nifty India Defence index fell 5.48% intraday to 9,190.60, a fourth straight losing day. Full list on MarketChacha Movers.

SBI Securities on the unwind: "there was an expectation last week that, on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, there could be a major defence deal announcement between India and Russia. That expectation has not materialised."

Flows: today's provisional FII/DII numbers were not out at the time of writing. On Sep 11, FIIs were net sellers of ₹930.90 cr — a fourth straight day — against DII buying of ₹1,968.17 cr.

Currency, commodities, global

  • USD/INR ~95.97, +0.15% on the day and near seven-week lows (Trading Economics).
  • Brent ~$106.85, +1.1% and a four-month high, up 17.6% in a month, with Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline still offline. Gold ~$4,314, -0.86%.
  • Asia close: Nikkei flat at 63,484; Hang Seng -1.0%. Europe now: DAX -0.2%, FTSE -0.3%, Euro Stoxx 50 -0.2%. US futures point higher — Dow +0.4%, S&P +0.6%, Nasdaq +0.8%.

Wall Street fell on Monday (Nasdaq -0.56%) after AI industry leaders called for a slower pace of frontier model development. Our moves ledger logged the rotation it caused: Nvidia -3.4%, Arm -9.7% and Micron -5.2%, against CrowdStrike +15.3% and Palo Alto +14% as money moved into cybersecurity.

Data: what landed, what lands next

India's August prints came out on Monday's holiday: CPI 4.82% (from 4.45% in July), staying above the RBI's target, and WPI 9.92% (from 9.78%), with fuel and power inflation accelerating to 22.93%. Forex reserves land Friday Sep 18, after a record $44.9bn weekly jump to $785.7bn. Everything else is on the MarketChacha calendar.

Sentiment: risk-off domestically, but selectively — money left defence and the broader market and went into IT, helped by a soft rupee. This is rotation more than capitulation.

What to watch tonight and tomorrow

The FOMC began its two-day meeting today; the decision lands Wednesday at 2:00 pm ET. This one is live — the target range is 3.50%-3.75% and, per CME FedWatch data cited after Chair Warsh's Jackson Hole speech, the implied probability of a hike moved above 50%. With Brent at a four-month high and Indian WPI near 10%, watch whether the statement leans on energy-driven inflation. US August retail sales arrive Wednesday at 8:30 am ET, housing starts Thursday. For India, the rupee near seven-week lows and a possible fifth session of FII selling are the first two things to check tomorrow.
